So, Lets say that I'm about to be the owner of a new high performance laptop. Lets also say that I anticipate being in a situation where I will not have a reliable internet connection on this computer.
Since so many DRM schemes rely on having a constant internet connection, this could be a bit of an issue. I'm looking for some general advice on where to find games that do not require the ability to regularly "call home" when I want to play them.
Where I would I shop(beside GOG) for such titles?
Are there any specific titles or publishers to avoid?

You either have no internet at all or a unstable connection. Which is it?
Your question is a little difficult to answer, each game may or may not have some sort of DRM and each type of DRM is different. Tages, Starforce, SecuROM etc. etc.
The recent Ubisoft titles have this 'always on' connection DRM, so I've read. Although the DRM might have been removed with recent updates.
Steam is DRM and will check every so often online while gaming. You can game offline but I've not tried that feature, ever. (

There's a few game titles listed here. (

Honestly, I don't know. While its likely that I'll be able to get on briefly (ie, I should be able to validate games), a reliable connection is unlikely.

It's possible to play most Steam games offline, though as I understand it, you'll need to occasionally connect to your account for it to keep working. I've never tried playing offline for any real length of time, however.
Of course, you won't get anything like achievements or community without internet, and that applies to other services too, e.g. don't try to bring Starcraft 2.
Games that come on actual physical discs are probably your best bet, just check that they don't have any kind of online activation.
