From now on the proper answer to people having trouble installing from CD should be "gog.com."

he already owns the license for the original cd release, therefore (as I've mentioned) acquiring the install files by alternate means, like borrowing an identical cd from a friend, or downloading an image of that cd, and installing from there should be legal (it works like this over here, for example, as long as you have a legally acquired, valid ms windows key/license, microsoft does not really care where you got your install files).
while rebuying the software is an option, the user should not be forced into the purchase, and be informed of all his options instead. of course, no links to backup copies of any software will be given on the forums.

The irony is that most "backup" copies floating around on torrent sites these days are of the gog.com version.

what is the difference between a man and a slave? a man chooses, a slave obeys. in this case, you can either choose to only get what is rightfully yours, or obey your urge to just take everything. this is what this world needs the most, I believe - people who are able to make choices that are morally correct, and not just obey the urge to do what is most beneficial for them at the given moment, no matter the collateral damage. unfortunately, this goes against the very basic opportunistic and egoistic routines that are hardwired into our tiny lizard brains - only very few are able to choose to not take something that is free for picking, just because it's morally wrong.
I call it the thousand dollar button problem - imagine a button that would give you thousand dollars each time you press it, but with each pressing an unknown random human being is killed off, maybe young, maybe old, maybe evil, maybe good, the point is that you simply do not know. this would be completely anonymous, nobody would ever know it were you pressing the button. and here is where the fun starts - there is just so many of those who live, and would deserve to die, and a ton of others that are completely worthless, just wasting oxygen, so the chances you hit someone who had it coming anyway are pretty good, right? and even if not, we don't care about strangers, do we? just a few pressings, and life could be so much easier.. would you have the strength of character to not give in the temptation? I myself am not too sure.
this is the ultimate purgatory that mankind creates for itself - everybody just wants to be happy, and we all end up stepping on each others feet, tripping, falling down and ending up spreading misery, death and destruction. and there is absolutely no way out - whoever sees it, it's just a mirage, it's like communism, or free market, those things will never work as long as people will be people, because even though the theory is good, it simply does not take into account that there are always going to be those who will rape and destroy everything just so they will be able to drink champagne just for 24 more hours. the more you try, the more horrible the results are going to be.
in the end everything is just a game - one that everybody loses, sooner or later.

Thanks for that, voodoo. I think I'll go step in front of a bus, now.
Game Over

LMFAO! little did I know that my post would start a philosophical debate, but, getting into the spirit of things, Where you are right about most things Voodoo, I have to disagree with you on the matter of nothing mattering....... think about that one for a sec, I did. Anyway, it all boils down to the freedom of choice that God gave us all. Ultimately it DOES matter(to someone or something). A butterfly beats its wings in Georgia and a tornado manifests in Beijing 3 days later; a 30 second summer shower falls in Manhattan, and the vineyards in Venice succumb to drought; etc. Everything is interconnected and so everything does matter. Even the decision to take no action is a decision and effects those around you and those worlds away.
So yes, it is a morally upright choice to not download a pirated copy of licensed software. But, who knows wether or not the one I "stole" instead of re-purchasing, will be responsible for bankrupting Eidos and forcing all the employees to spend unproductive time looking for another job while their families go hungry or otherwise without? Everything we DO matters, and everything we don't do matters; oftentimes more than the things we do.

So, if I rip a fart in Michigan, does that mean a tree falls over in Kolkata?
