Slightly different point but related
I love Windows Explorer and have since 3.1.
Every release it becomes more marginalised.

Gillie, this won't mean any extra cost to you. Unless, Microsoft makes IE available to you only via purchase and you are dead-set on using IE. Which, you shouldn't be... Firefox, Opera, uhhh that other one and the thing from that company... Anyway, they're FREE and I have no doubt you'd find at least one of them FAR superior to IE.
Also, unless you have a BURNING need to purchase Windows 7 immediately (and I can't fathom a reason for this) you needn't worry about it for quite a while. Always wait with new Microsoft stuff, the geeks are finding workarounds to problems they haven't even located yet, so by the time you get yours... all the answers are there. :)

It does raise the issue of how you download a proper browser on a new computer when you don't have a browser, though.
I'm kinda wondering about this now too...

windows explorer the file viewer can be used as a internet browser.
But, that functionality was because of IE's integration into Windows, I wonder exactly how they'll play this one.
Maybe I should read the article? Naw...

Microsoft will probably add some kind of a 'Choose a web browser' wizard, no idea how one would be able to get a web browser without a web browser otherwise.

I'm fairly sure Windows will still have network and HTTP access built in, so they could easily just have a simple program that allows you to download a browser installer, I guess. Either from a pre-determined list or from a manually-entered URL?

I have no real desire at the moment to get Windows 7 if at all I just found the whole idea plain daft because they will find a way around it anyway.
Anyway I have not had Vista that long with a new PC not my idea at all. I would keep with XP as to the browser, though I had to tweak it to play T2 it really has not been that bad, I will not change it again too soon.
I am not bothered Perhaps choice is a good thing instead of Monopolising, but I take it the US will have IE?

That's because it's integrated and interconnected with internet explorer though, if I'm not mistaken.
That hasn't been the case since IE6 + XP. IE and the Windows file explorer have been separate entities for several years now, due to A. security concerns and B. EU anti-trust court rulings.

IE 7 on XP with SP2 was the earliest that this happened, not IE6 on XP.
belboz on 15/6/2009 at 13:29
Well european shops that sell computers will probably bundle a cd rom containing web browsers with new pc's and for those that build their own pc's, there will probably be a browser on a cd option as well.
If you use btinternet then you notice that they bundle some custom browser with their internet connection, and you can get that just by ringing a telephone number or going into your local bt shop if there's one in your town.

I meant that IE6 + XP was the last iteration with that feature. Should've worded it better, sorry.
