What exactly was so wrong with Garrett that he had to be totally revamped?
We live in the times where things are made more and more over the top. Everyone tries to make things bigger, flashier, broader, thicker, more massive and sprinkled liberally with bigger explosions. It's the flawed Hollywood mentality that has poisoned video games.
Over exaggerated, 2D characters (super mary-sue heroes or absurd antiheroes with cliche lines), super over the top oversized swords and double-bitted axes, spiked armours unrealistic anatomic proportions for characters, 35 kg. girls kicking 150 kg muscled men into walls...
Garrett is now Ninja-Batman because the majority (masses? Do I smell anger?) of 12 to 18 year old boys think ninjas are cool, that nobody can beat the Batman and that it's much more cool to shoot a bow sideways than like it's been shot for 10,000 years. And if these gamers (who are your prime target to spend money on your game or whine to their moms until they spend said money) want a re-imagined, much more easy to understand Garretman than a complex character who is primarily selfish, has internal conflicts and is torn between his good side and his sense of guilt towards the keepers and wanting to stay alive and out of harm's way.
Did I mention ninja masks and looking menacing is cool?

I take it you didn't grow up in the '80s, man...

Wish I hadn't clicked that Strategyinformer article. Mystical but not magical? Well I guess treebeasts, ratmen, craymen, ape beasts, haunts are right out, as well as zombies.
On the other hand we may have a look at some ludicrously interesting aspects of the MYSTICAL side of the world.
Truly, a magnificent Thief game! :erg:

I could expect (think I saw something in concept arts) there would be mad plague victims... To be honest DP/MA zombies were never perfect because they are too slow. But walking corpes in DS were always scary since they could run.
Regarding other undeads I hope they would leave them (at least as in MA - in secret areas). But make Thief game without RTC/Cradle level is not the best solution (even I like MA too). Even zombies could be replaced more ethereal forms better to have...

On some other character maybe; not on Garrett. And last time I checked (before EMs screenshots & video of T4) Garrett never wore black eyeshadow & eyeliner. At least I haven't seen any screenshots where Garrett painted his fingernails black like in the concept art posted a few months ago. Yet.
And like Durinda, I also wasn't surprised at the 'mad plague victims', but I wasn't expecting them to replace zombies & haunts. I may not like those nasty creatures, but they were a part of the Thief world. Just like Hammerites, Mechanists, and Keepers.

Dia, this is your personal sarcasm detector. There are many like it, but this one is yours. Use it.

Yeah, I know you were being sarcastic, but I'm still riled about the whole eyeshadow/eyeliner/ninja mask thing. Almost fell of my chair when I first saw the closeup pic of NuGarrett. I thought maybe it was an April Fool's Day prank.
Nuth on 9/4/2013 at 13:22
I thought maybe NuGarrett was based on Marilyn Manson.:wot:
