Apologies for resurrecting dead threads. See my post on page two for more info from Bethsoft
Rumor has it Bethesda plans no official expansion for Oblivion in the same way as they did two expansions for Morrowind. Since Oblivion fills up an entire DVD they see no way to create a "Game of the Year" edition for the XBox 360 because there wouldn't be any room on the disc.
This explains the puzzling pay-to-download official plugin route they've decided to take--little tiny bits of models and horse armor here, pathetic little 15 minute quests there. Sorry, I hate that stuff. Not because I'm cheap or feel it should be free, but after I finally stop playing the game I have no interest in starting it up again to spend a few minutes on a new quest then stopping again. With Tribunal and Blood Moon it was great. After I tired of the game and had put it aside it was great to go back in again and spend a week on a whole new grand adventure.
Just speculation and rumor but you know, I believe it. Fucked by the XBox once more.

If they wanted to make an expansion for the XBox, they'd find a way--most likely by utilizing the HDD on the 360. I'm really not sure, but I'm also not too worried. The modding community will probably start mods which expand Tamriel, and that's all I really care about.

Consoles can have multi-discs. If it was like Morrowind style where the expansion is a whole other area, it could prompt for a disc swap when you go there.

Except they can't. When Microsoft released the version of the 360 without the HDD, everyone was afraid that it just wouldn't play a lot of games because they would require a hard drive- but Microsoft promised that every game would run on the version without the hard drive because developers were instructed to design games with the non-HDD 360 in mind.
So yeah, much as I hate to jump on the Microsoft-hating bandwagon, they kind of fucked that one up.

Agreed. The worst news of 2005 was that 360 would have a HD-less version. At least PS3 won't suffer that flaw

Is this confirmed? In spite of its size, I was really counting on a retail-level expansion or two.

Flip through the manual and check out the land regions surrounding the game map. Check out the descriptions and history sections in the History of Tamriel book that came with the collectors edition. This is pure assumption, but I believe there is much intention of expansion packs if not much larger downloads in the pay area. Personally I hope they do a full blown expansion pack with one of the adjoining land masses and include all the cheap downloads as a bonus (all on CD/DVD of course, cause I don't like downloading paid software).

Bethesda never does more than one province in their games, at least not since Arena. Another province would require an ES V, not an expansion for ES IV. Fodder for a full expansion is practically infinite, it just won't be one of those surrounding areas you see on the map.

I freely admit, but that's what I thrive on. Still, the facts do present a strong case I think:
* First, there's (
http://www.mygamer.com/index.php?platform=&publisher=&developer=&game=&page=interviews&mode=viewinterviews&id=37) this. Just vague enough to invite wild speculation. So I will! :D
* Then, fact: Oblivion occupies a full DVD with no room for other substantial content.
* Fact: Bethesda's number one priority is the XBox 360 and Bill Gates.
* Lastly, this new downloadable content model which they intend to continue into the foreseeable future. Perhaps an alternate way to make the money they would ordinarily have made with an official expansion?
XBox 360 will eventually support hi def DVDs, but when? And how many XBox owners are going to get it? Seeing as how XBox is their primary, almost sole target market, will they ever consider it worthwhile to make an expansion for such a small minority as will be able to play it?
A question: If so many XBox 360's have no HD, are they still able to download horse armor and the like? Will these people be able to use the forthcoming patch? How does that all work?

I think they can save that data on a memory card. Not sure, though. Obviously, most Xbox 360 people WILL have HDs if they want to save their games - the memory cards are a ridiculous $40 and at that price you might as well just buy the hard drive, and for that you might as well get the premium pack and get all the other stuff for free...I imagine the core pack was only purchased by those who couldn't get a premium, or parents who didn't know what they were doing.
Komag on 29/5/2006 at 00:14
I wonder how many core packs have been sold. Any source for current sales figures for 360's, divided into core/premium?
