Okay after searching all relevant forums I still have no luck with Thief Gold's cutscenes. They absolutely refuse to load.
I ran the codec on the game disk, I did the c:\your\path\to\thief\LGVID.AX thing and managed to get it to work, and I placed the ir50_32.dll into my system 32 folder. Still no luck. Does anyone have any advice because I really want to play this game with cutscenes

You said you managed to get it to work when you moved LGVID.AX to the system folder. Did it work in-game/out-of-game? How many times did it work?

Well I should probably mention that when I placed LGVID.AX into the system folder the core game worked yes. But the cutscenes have never worked. Even when I play them in Windows Media Player on the disk I only get sound

Run the game as an administrator, otherwise the cutscenes will not fire. Same problem occurs under Vista.

Running as admin does not always solve the problem. I can't get movies or cutscenes to run in Thief or Mediaplayer, but VirtualDub plays them just fine.
