A simple yet killing detail, surely all of you have wondered about it.
WHY there aren't any female stalkers, bandits, soldiers, scientists in the Zone?
It appears as if the Zone was a forbidden area for women, a prison (reminds me enclosed prison colony in Gothic 1 which had similar feeling) and all stalkers were some kind of monks. And then later in the game you get a note in the PDA, a folklore story of a random stalker about how he has met a female scientist and was beside himself of seeing a woman in the Zone - even he describes it as some rare event. It's not natural but then it also makes the Zone interesting, unusual, and even more socially detached from the rest of the world, because there are no subtle "sexual appeals" for guys in the game, no flirting, no sex puns and jokes which would disturb the specific mood created by the environment. Has been this done on purpose? Dozens of "small" details like this make me think this is not an ordinary "Hollywood game".

I don't see the Zone as an appropriate place for women, although I think those who would decide to go in, would fare quite well, along with the male stalkers. It's just... not right to have women there. It would spoil the mood and as you said the detachment of the place.
The Zone is the place where most probably a stalker will die, this is the main concept behind the "concept" and even for a second you are not allowed to think otherwise. Therefore putting there also women would decrease the Zone's threat, at least apparently, I think.
And then... it would mean a year of extra work for GCS in order to produce female models, voices, animations... ;) It would also raise a question: why can't I play as a female character? Because there is hardly a girl who's playing Stalker and why a male should play as a female? ...

Male Stalker (OR MS): My God it's a mutant!
Pulls out machine gun and starts blasting away.
Male Stalker: Few, good thing thats over!
Female voice: Help! Help!
MS: I'm coiming!
Male stalker runs over to women
Women: Hurry bring me a med kit, that thing broke my nail!
The male stalker runs over into a random shed in the middle of now where.
REAL stalker: My preeeetttyyy!
Women: Noo! *GAG* Nooo *GAG*
Male stalker: Here I got- Dear lord!
Real stalker: Uh.... Hi?
Male stalker: Oh my God... CAN I JOIN YOU :D
Real stalker: SURE!
Both real and male stalker continue... um, doing something...

I have been wondering the same lately. Although women aren't the more triggerhappy sex, they are more than capable of being in the zone I'd say. :erm:
How would the game play if Marked One was a woman, the only one in the zone for that matter...?

The zone is the last refuge for manly men. Or women are in the game but since they are modeled after Ukrainian women they are often mistaken for mutants.

Well, with the extremely high population of males in the game, it would be an extreme risk for the female stalkers to be raped/kidnapped/et cetera. And all the men would be exceptionally cranky since they probably haven't been with a woman in a long time. Most of the people in the Zone are the type that don't mind killing others and probably all have a criminal history, after all.
