I do not own a gun, but I fully intend to purchase one in the next few years. It will likely not be a handgun, partly for aesthetic reasons. It will instead be a rifle (probably lever-action) or a shotgun.
So what's the reason you're buying it?

You're really grasping mopgoblin. Yes, people can make stuff but you do realise that you're suggesting that tighter gun laws = masses of homemade bombs and guns don't you?
No, so far I'm just pointing out that bombs aren't particularly tricky to make. I wasn't intending to argue either way on whether bombs (or homemade guns) would replace firearms in violent crime. That said, it wouldn't really surprise me if bombs were used in place of firearms in certain contexts, such as school-shooting-like incidents.

Sounds like my kind of gang.

I'm surprised at myself for not really being so surprised at the ridiculous arguments in this thread.
dethtoll & mopgoblin- bombs have nothing to do with this. Get over it.
flower - you sound like a raving NRA member. Of course it's the people who use them but the fact is those people have fairly easy access to them. This isn't about punishing anyone, just about making it harder for the wrong people to get hold of a gun.
heretic - what on Earth are you trying to say, really? ATF? Get out. And you not having committed any crime (except against common sense right here in this thread) has nothing to do with it. People do commit violent crimes with guns and in the USA access to them is fairly easy. That is all.

And yes, it IS the same thing.
A game is the same thing as a tool for killing people? That is
exactly the sort of illogic we decry in Thompson's writings.

Yeah, but... with a gun you can shoot targets. or something.
Computer games were originally designed to amuse nerds, and guns were originally designed to actually blow real shit up. yeah, that's the same thing. The "sporting" thing is just an aside, like using games for education or whatever. [hippie]A real gun ban WOULD stop the criminals getting guns. It goes like this: stop making guns, destroy the guns we already have.[/hippie]

I'm not a raving NRA member, I'm not even a member of the NRA. Gay women don't fit too well in with that crowd of fudds, cowboys, religious extremists and rednecks. If there were a chapter of the Pink Pistols in Tulsa I'd probably be a member, though.
I disagree with your argument on grounds that you are flat-out incapable of understanding. I think it's pretty insulting that unless we're government employees, you feel we're too immature and stupid to behave responsibly with firearms.
I'm sure many of you think I'm not a moral person, but do bear in mind that morality is entirely subjective. What's okay to one is notsomuch to another. My beliefs are probably pretty callous and cold from your point of view.
People die all the time, from all sorts of different things. It's not that unusual or cruel to me, so I really don't think much of it. If it's alive it must eventually die. I accept this and understand it. I don't live my life terrified of everything like some of you folks seem to. Maybe that's why I've never had ulcers.
I don't care how people meet their untimely demise. If not one way, they'd die another way.
I'm done with this argument because it's pointless to continue.
