The recommended spec for Cyberpunk is only a 1060GTX??
Oh, I'm fine then. And surprised.
I'd guess that's only kosher if you stick with 1080p.

What's the latest on backwards compatibility? I remember hearing a few months ago that BC might mostly be more or less equivalent to playing on a PS4, with little additional benefit in terms of framerates or higher resolutions, but that was back when everything was vague rumours only.
Sony is half-arsing it. No PS1+2 BC despite having perfect emulation of both, supports only 99% of PS4 games.
Xbox on the other hand is trying to kick it out of the park with their BC efforts.

They're not going to invest in a one-off hardware solution for older generations when they can charge you for PS Now every month instead.
Anyway, there may be resolution and frame rate enhancements for PS4 titles according to (
https://www.polygon.com/2020/9/18/21445615/ps5-backward-compatible-ps4-games-jim-ryan) this. I'd expect not much differentiation between the Pro's enhancements and the PS5's back-compat as a simple solution for the Pro-enabled games, though I might be pleasantly surprised if they do actually put work into boosting that further.

They haven't even being doing that in practice. The anecdotes that I've heard recently is that the amount of PS1+2 games on PS Now is pathetic to practically non-existent.
Also the solutions would entirely be software-based. They had perfect PS1 emulation on PSP, Vita and PS3. They have PS2 emulation on PS4, if you have a jailbroken/soft-modded PS4 console then you run PS2 ISOs using the software written for the "PS2 Classics on PS4" software line on PSN Store (which they stopped releasing new games for years ago).

'Hardware' solution. As in emulation tied to the console du jour. They even have a working PS2 emulator that runs a few titles on PS4, but either it's not up to snuff for the rest of the catalogue, or Sony doesn't see the reason for a comprehensive back-compat solution with it. Probably a little of column a and a little of column b.

Normally backwards compatibility wouldn't be too much of a big whoop for me, but hearing that I can just keep playing all the PS4 games I'm currently playing on PS5 and they'll run better kinda makes me wanna just go ahead and pre-order a PS5.

I've never gotten a console on launch before but this kinda feels like "why not". Also Cyberpunk is coming out next month and I'd rather play it on a more powerful machine.
Also if you get the PS5 within November you get the first PS+ game which is Bugsnax. BUGSNAX! OH SONY WHY MUST YOU TEMPT ME WITH BUGSNAX!!!

I'm tempted by this too, but I've got a backlog of PS4 games to play that play just fine.
This is probably a summer or Xmas 2021 buy for me.
One thing I'm wondering about is the VR on this. Looks like you can use the current Sony VR setup with it, but with the increased power I imagine that some newer stuff might be on the way, including hardware. I'm wondering if Half Life Alex will eventually be ported. I can't be buying loads of kit all the time for individual games.

I might get myself one as a Christmas present, but at the same time I know I don't really need one and I'd be just as happy mopping up my back catalogue on my PS4 Pro. Though those images of raytraced Spider-Man do look quite tasty. (CONTROL with DLSS 2.0 has made me something of a RT convert.)

Oh oops, I didn't notice just how sold out they are everywhere. Looks like the earliest I can get one is "early 2021". Alas, no bugsnax for me. :(

Everyone's talking about bugsnax!

I'll definitely pick up the PS5 at some stage, though not in a rush given that I upgraded my PS4 to the pro version around 1.5 years ago or so. I also want to wait a while until there's quite a few Nextgen games to choose from. Bugsnax may turn out to be an ok game and all, but it looks very low poly, from a generation or two ago.
On another note, I'm hopeful that the new generation of consoles will be successful. Fortunately Stadia hasn't been a runaway success, so hopefully there's life in the ol home console for a little while yet.
