The Switch release is single player only, but it comes with the two DLC expansions (Reign of Giants and Shipwrecked). There's another expansion due out later this year (Hamlet) but that will likely be a separate purchase. I suppose Don't Starve Together may come into the picture once Nintendo starts up their online service in the fall.

That's disappointing. The mobile version comes with Reign of Giants, so getting the Switch version would really only get me Shipwrecked over what I already have now.

No Virtual Console for the Switch:

That's not to say they won't release selected titles on the eshop, but the overall feel I get is that they aren't putting as much effort into having a large library of vintage games available.
I still love my Wii U, if for nothing else than it's my de facto retro Nintendo emulator. I should probably go on one last shopping spree there before stuff starts disappearing.

They're doing a "retro games Netflix" built into their online play subscription service instead.

That's only NES games I think, I don't that's a substitute for the VC.
EvaUnit02 on 9/5/2018 at 14:31
They will add more games over time. Gamecube games on Switch is a recurring rumour IIRC.

Thing is, does Nintendo even need the VC specifically anymore? There are already tons of Neo Geo games in the eShop, and SNK themselves are bringing some of their old arcade and NES titles out in a new collection here soon. Same with Sega, who's releasing some of their big Genesis/Megadrive games on the Switch.
Nintendo seems to be taking a "if you wanna release an old game, then release it" tact in regards to emulation.

I'm guessing there's no way they're just going to include that as part of the monthly service when they can charge you individually for them. The NES stuff is just throwaway, but they won't give something like Link to the Past or Super Mario Sunshine away. And based on how they priced Tropical Freeze for the Switch, they probably won't be cheap.

You NEVER needed VC. I've been playing emulated 4-16 bit console games since I was 9 years old in 1997.

Seems about right, Nintendo are a ridiculously anti-consumer company. They've been forcing people to buy the same ancient emulated games over and over again on new Nintendo platforms since 2007, they probably wouldn't stop now.

OK, but saying you never needed VC is like saying you never need to buy a car, just grab one off the street.
(And no, I'm no boy scout, I emulate shit all the time).
