Both ZB and I were referring to Unreal, which as far as I'm aware is the first Unreal game.
..Just sayin. ;)
(I could be wrong, mind you..but Unreal felt far far less polished than UT)

Don't think so. It's more like Unreal 1. UT engine was a bit improved ( it manages textures with higher resolution, more colors, better lights etc - to be able to compete id's tec3), ; and was developped paralel with Deus ex.

No, the Deus Ex engine is the build of the UnrealEngine that was used in Unreal Tournament (UT came out in 99, Deus Ex more than a year after). This fact is brought up in virtually all of the post-mortems and previews.
You will even sometimes see enemy AI's acting like UnrealTournament bots (crouching down and turning to face you, circle strafing while shooting and so on) in the game.
