That great actor, director, humanitarian and salad dressing maestro Paul Newman has (
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7639614.stm) passed on at the ripe old age of 83. Somewhat expected as he has been unwell for ages, but no less sad.
An all-round top bloke who made a difference, raising quarter of a billion dollars for charity with his vinaigrettes.
PS backup thread title was "Newman's Owned"

Another iconic dinosaur dead, with no replacements in sight.

I will eat a delicious salad today in his memory. (And chase it with Newman-O's)

I never liked Newman much when I was a teenager or in my early twenties. Until I saw "The Hustler". Best movie ever ! It's been my favorite movie ever since. (And I've seen quite a few, new and classics).
I don't like The Color of Money. Crappy movie. I can't believe anyone would get an Oscar for a movie like that. It must have been an Oscar for his role in The Hustler. He certainly deserved an Oscar for that.

Ah fuck.
Butch Cassidy and The Sting (Newman's VERY Own and Robert Redford) are brilliant.

He was a great actor. Cool Hand Luke is one of the greatest movies ever made. The rest of his movies (Hustler, The Sting, The Left Handed Gun, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof etc.) are also classics.

Butch and Sundance was the first movie I watched that almost showed boobies. I love that film.
No replacements in sight indeed. Is it going to be a horrible loss when we eventually lose Colin Farrell or Ben Affleck?

Certainly not those guys but maybe actors like Depp, Norton, DiCaprio or Bale, and I've more than likely missed plenty of other possibilities, are near as iconic as Newman but given time who can tell?
Anyway it's sad news. 'The Sting' was the first 'old' film I enjoyed, saw it one summer holiday when I was 12, and I recently discovered the somewhat forgotten Sidney Lumet film 'The Verdict' which contains what is now my personal favourite Newman performance.
And his salad dressings are ace.
