To be honest it's not that surprising, and it's not even that uncommon that a vendor receives counterfeit parts. Normally it occurs in the component level with individual components being counterfeit. In this situation the components often work and nobody notices for ages.
The only kind of unusual aspect is that it's a retail packaged part, rather than an OEM part.
Not exactly counterfeit, but I used to work for an electronics manufacturer and one day it was noticed that a small-time competitor had started producing a product that we'd been selling to them in the past. Upon X-raying some of the parts it became apparent that they'd copied them, right down to the minor error in the tracking on the circuit.

Yeah I've been holding off on watching the movie it's from precisely because of that scene being edited so many times.
(I still laughed though.)
