You can't 'force steam' (well, unless you rename the exe) but what you could do as an alternative to voodoo's suggestion is create a Non-steam shortcut in Steam instead: "Add a non-steam game to my library." I guess it'd be better to rename the exe and just backup the old thief.exe.

the best thing to do with the steam version is to copy away the game so steam can't reach it and mod (and play) that. if you modify a steam controlled game you are always risking that steam will see the game files as "corrupted" and will restore the "proper" ones. there might be an option in steam to disable the file checks, but don't quote me on that.
now children, what have we learned today about sacrificing freedom to gain convenience?

With newdark while standing on a crate one can't crouch -but if you drop something on the crate (a key or crumbled paper worked) and than jump on the crate you can crouch or even lean.
This works probably because you're standing on something else now, but it is strange that even if I remove the item I'm standing on, I still can crouch.

Actually, I've crouched on crates many times in the new dark engine. Though, in many cases, I've had to move a bit before it let me crouch. Most likely, the item you are setting on the crate moves you so that you can crouch, even when you normally would be set wrong to crouch after getting on the crate. OK, maybe I could have worded that better, but I hope you understood me :/ I'm on medication right now, sorry.

Clearly explained, thanks.

The number of personal bugs continues to grow! I have never had problems crouching on crates. The only problems I've had stem from the fact that their invisible bounding boxes are spherical while the visible crate is cubical, which you can feel as you move across the tops of them, or see when they get thrown or dropped and won't lay flat on a flat surface sometimes.

I should've described this better. While you can crouch on a crate that is not surrounded by anything, crouching on a crate standing by wall is not possible probably due to the fact that you can't get to the center of the crate. This generally creates a problem going through a window or a pipe. Placing the crate slightly away from the wall may allow you to crouch but finding a good spot allowing you to crouch and pass through before falling off the crate can be tricky.
By placing an object on the crate you can crouch on a crate that's standing by a wall.

I wondered why I seemed to be so rubbish at crouching these days. Thanks for the tip.
