Perhaps it should be borne in mind that for non-computer literate people, Readmes etc. can often be confusing and contain unfamiliar language, and the whole process of downloading, installing, whatever, can be very daunting. It's always easy when you know how.

Hes right. Most people never used msdos or linux and have no idea how to do anything that requires more then point and click.
To them file systems and what directory to use are hard concepts to understand let alone how to unzip/extract to another directory or rename files or edit configuration files.
Hopefully we can just start pointing people to tfix and tafferpatcher now that they both support 1.19
Its not going to stop all the silly (To us) questions but it will help.

Ravenhook, why do you removed "use_d3d_display" ? Now you have no d3d...

I think that means to use something like QueryPerformanceCounter instead of the RDTSC instruction, something that was introduced with the first pentium's. Nowadays RDTSC is not very reliable for various reasons, it was great till they started putting out dual/quad etc cpus.
I was actually pretty excited when I first heard about it back in the day since it was a much more reliable timer. That and FINALLY adding CPUID so we could stop trying to determine what cpu was in the system.
You can read about it here if you like (

The main ramification of use_hi_res_timer is that rendering should be smoother (potentially perceptibly; potentially not) as a result of greater timing precision. It should be enabled unless you have a compelling reason not to enable it.
