Did that, problem still remains.

ok, now try changing
to
that should do it (DX6 safemode). this isn't an optimus laptop, is it?

It's acer aspire v3-571, I bought it last spring.
Now there's a black flash, after which the grey screen appears, now with the windows hourglass in the middle. Still no reaction from any imaginable key combination.

I got it working by enabling force windowed mode and setting full screen to 0 in another cfg file. Now it shows borderless 1024*768 screen. Maybe it didn't function becouse of invalid video mode, this laptop seems to be rather picky on it. I could try setting screen size to 1366*768 and set windows to hide it's taskbar, that would be virtually equivalent of fullscreen, but I think I'll continue experimenting tomorrow.
Edit: Ok I couldn't sleep. 1366*768 window works and it seems to automatically cover windows taskbar.
THIS IS TOTALLY AWESOME! Thank you everybody!
Edit 2: It works <=> windowed mode is forced, I could even re-enable multisampling in windowed mode. This doesn't really matter becouse the window covers the entire screen and hasn't title bar or borders, so it's virtually full screen.

Can someone help me improve this cfg file for Thief demo from the forum ? I modified some things only in this cfg, not other cfg.

Sorry guys but I am not having any luck saving my games. I think I installed the patch correctly as it works great now but whenever I click on saving a game it says that its invalid. Save failed.
Any help or suggestions? Sorry to be such a rookie but I would really appreciate your help as I loved this game and all the Thief games. I recently got a new monitor and I was disappointed that the graphics were so bad because of the software but with te patch the game and graphics look great other than the stupid game won't let me save them.

you game location is either protected or read only.

Sounds like voodoo47 is right and theres a couple of things we can do to try and fix that.
If you installed to either one of the "C:\Program Files (x86)" or "C:\Program Files" you should move the game to a different location.
Like "C:\Games\Thief2" or even another drive if you have more then one.
Then you have to make sure the files/folders are not read only, windows file security is fun fun fun :P
BEFORE YOU DO THIS - I try to give clear concise instructions but if you screw it up its on YOU! I am not sitting in front of your computer you are. There are whole books about windows security but hopefully we can get you squared away :)
Anyplace I use (PC_NAME\Users) for example the PC_NAME will be whatever your computer is named NOT PC_NAME, well unless you named your computer PC_NAME and YOUR_NAME is whatever your user name is of course.
Open an explorer window(NOT internet explorer) you can press and hold the windows Key + "E"
* Right click on the folder where your thief install is located.
* Click "Properties" its at the bottom of the popup list.
* Change to the "Security" tab
*
You should see a list box labeled "Group or user names"
then another list box labeled "Permissions for Users"
Under that "For special permissions or advanced settings, click Advanced"
* Click the button labeled "Advanced"
* Change to the "Owner" tab.
*
You will see something like "Object Name: D:\GAMES\THIEF2" as an example.
Then a static text "Current Owner:" with an edit box underneath of it with the current owner listed.
If you are the owner "YOUR_NAME (PC_NAME\YOUR_NAME)" or "Users (PC_NAME\Users)" then you can skip to the next section, otherwise read on.
You need to take ownership of the directory and files.
* Right click on the button labeled "Edit" it may have a shield on it also telling you it requires admin privileges.
* Select YOUR name "YOUR_NAME (PC_NAME\YOUR_NAME)" or "Users (PC_NAME\Users)"
* Check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
* Click "Ok" another window should pop up and it should show a list as it changes the owner on all the files then close when done.
*
Now assuming that went well you have to exit out of the properties before proceeding with the next step.
At this point you OWN the file or "YOUR_PC_NAME\Users" owns the files
Now we have to change the permissions themselves - Yea its a PITA I know :)
* Right click on the folder where your thief install is located again and click "Properties" its at the bottom of the popup list.
* Change to the "Security" tab
You should see a list box labeled "Group or user names" and under that "To change permissions, click Edit."
* Click the Edit button.
A New window in my case titled "Permissions for games" (Whatever the folder is named) pops up.
There is a list box titled "Group or user names:"
* Select "Authenticated Users" if its there or "Users (PC_NAME\Users)" or whatever you want :)
* In the list box below click "Full Control" ALLOW
* Click the OK button your done.
Now hopefully your problem is solved.

Hi all,
forgive my stupidity. I've just installed Thief 2 from the UK Sold Out CDs, installed the 1.19 patch. Windows 7 64-bit machine, integrated Intel graphics. Game runs great.
The gamma, though is rather dark (in the rooms in Running Interference that had no lighting, I could hardly see anything) and I can't adjust it in the video settings. How can I adjust it?
As a temporary workaround, from the desktop icon properties, I had to set the .exe to "run as administrator" and I enter the admin password every time. I couldn't save resolution settings or any games until I did this. So not being able to set gamma in the game's menu is not because of permissions.
