I have not been able to solve my Hud text looking like gibberish or a foreign language. I can fix it by disabling "use_d3d_display" at the top of the cam_ext.cfg file
This happened when I installed the Jun2010_redist Directx. DXdiag runs without errors and every test passes.
Every place I check within Windows XP the language is English. Display Driver and Windows Language Setting. Is there some particular Unicode Table Language I am missing?
This happens within the new demo and my patched T2.
Anyone have an idea where to look to solve this problem.
I think I've already answered this - something similar happened on one of my old nvidia pcs, are you running some old gpu hardware (with outdated drivers) by any chance? if that's the case, just play without "use_d3d_display" and you should be ok. updating drivers might help as well.

Oh, this engine update is not the only awesomeness that happened... Prepare yourself to something music-related in the nearest future, SS2-fans! ;)

I do have the most up to date driver for my old Ti 4600 ver 93.71. Maybe I'll try some non WHQL drivers and see what happens. For now I will keep running without the d3d enabled and if I find drivers that behave I'll post it.

running without use_d3d_display just means the game uses the classic DX6 renderer instead of the new fancy one. basically, that just means you won't be able to use resolutions larger than fullHD. not much of a concern in your case, I bet. so if the DX6 mode works fine for you, there is nothing to solve, really.
but if you do manage to find a working driver (can be a nightmare with these old geforce cards), do post the version - might be handy in the future.

It's working great! Thief 2 is running widescreen and lookin' fine. Plus the loading times for missions and cutscenes have been incredibly fast.
Except I've got a bit of a problem, I can't save or load any file, and I'm not sure what the problem is. I did happen to get some custom save files awhile ago that let you load any mission, but I can't load them, and saving over them doesn't help with anything.
I'm running it off of an old CD version that I've kept up to date, with ddfix and some texture mods.
Anyone know how to fix this without reinstalling Thief 2 entirely?

check whether your files/folders are not set to read only, and make sure the game is not installed in program files or some similar windows protected folder, those are known to cause issues.
but, as always, a clean, fresh install is highly recommended, and known to fix almost all strange issues.

I definitely agree with this - I tried the patch on my GOG copy of Thief Gold, and the movies didn't work. Re-install of Thief Gold from the GOG installer, and it all works fine out-of-the-box.

Did you forget to extract the video player DLL?
