Heya,
I'm a newb at Oblivion (have it for 2 days on my PC now) and I've never played Morrowind or any other Elder Scrolls game before. So, here is my most urgent newbie question:
Can I happily steal stuff from people I'm probably going to have to interact with later on (as long as I'm not seen)?
I mean, will they eventually get all cranky and refuse to give me quests or sell me stuff? Or would, for instance, the fighters' guild refuse me as a member because I've stolen too much stuff (or from their guildhouse)?
So far, I've only been stealing food, because I need it to brew potions, which I sell for a bit of money; and because I know of no fence yet.
ty in advance

You can be kicked out of the Fighters Guild for "stealing" from other Guild members. If you assault another member of the Guild (or damage/kill your own horse, easy to do accidentally in a pitched battle), you will also be accused of stealing from the Guild. If this happens, no Fighters Guild members will talk to you.
So, it seems that if you're caught, you'll be kicked out and have to carry out a task to get back in. If you get expelled three times you won't be able to re-apply.

Count on warriors to have the stupidest rules...
But if I am not caught stealing from them -or from anyone, actually-, it doesn't matter?
I need those 2000 apples and bread, really. (Probably the Thieves' guild won't like me neither, for stealing all those petty things. )

If a guard encounters you with stolen goods in your possession, they seem to automatically recognise them as stolen and arrest you.
Otherwise, steal away. If the target doesn't see you do it, they should still like you. :)

As long as I just sweettalk with the guards, they don't care about what I carry with me. ;)
Thank you for the information, I'll loot the shops right away. :D

Good luck! :)
Oh, did I mention that the Mages' Guild and Thieves' Guild also have no-stealing policies similar to the Fighters' Guild one? ;)

Jees! By making potions and selling them even on level one, you can earn that amount easily. Plus, you'll increase both skills, merchant and alchemist. Why stealing? Goods of wich you can make potions are all over Cyrodiil. But, even if you are lazy enough to leave Imperial City, the amount of money you had earned while getting out of prison tunnels, at the very beginning, is enough to buy the stuff. It is times cheaper than what you would make of it. And only one rule - you got to have a mortar and a pestle, that, as far as I remember, are also among the stuff you can fetch out of tunnels... :)

If you just want to make potions to sell off & increase your alchemy skill, start raiding the various farms. For some reason the farmers don't seem to care, even when they see you stealing their tomatoes & carrots. Skingrad's vinyards and tomato farm are great for getting bulk quantities of ingredients.

Well, I just gave an advise on how to make money out of nothing.
BTW, it did surprise me, too, when I approached one farm and discovered that the "hand" in my viewfinder is not red which meant I could pick vegetables without being punished even though spotted. They are just too kind :)

I can think of one problem here; when Fathis asks you to steal, if you don't deliver then he doesn't register as your fence at a later stage. Though this is a bug and can be fixed with a patch.

Thought I'd mention it as it bugged the hell out of me.
