Newb Question about JohnP's textures... - by R34V3R

I have JohnP's collective texture pack installed, now I am playing The Crypt fan mission and it looks like the original textures are incorporated. Now I'm sure the author (can't think of his name at the moment) probably used the original thief 3 textures so thats prolly why, but with the texture pack installed are they supposed to appear as the new textures or would I have to edit that myself to play them with new ones, j/w if its normal to get regular textures with that texturepack installed...

Yes, if the author used the original textures, that's what you'll get. Unfortunately, most authors build without JohnP's textures. (Me included.)

So, is this due to the computers being not fast enough (system ressources etc.) in the editor? Otherwise I can't tell myself why even the blue highlight color is not changed in most fan missions...although it should be something that everyone likes to make TDS more comfortable.

No, it just adds more weight to the downloads. These fms can get huge :p

Just as a general principle I'd rather leave mods as mods and FMs as FMs. If people want to use high res textures then they can install John P's pack. Same with the various tweaks and minimalist stuff. Unless you've got compelling gameplay or aesthetic reasons to do so, I don't think you should force your preferences on the player.

My thoughts exactly!

But John P's textures (unless there is a new installer) only incorporate themselves into the OMs.
His installer finds the texture in the ibt and switches some bits so the game has to go out to the pctextures folder (or one of those). It isn't designed to try the same thing in an FM, it only works with the OMs. If you want to play an FM with his textures the author has to be the one to build his mission with them.
There is a performance hit because the textures are high res, but a performance gain because the texture is in the ibt and not in the pctextures folder. I don't know which has more of an effect.

And I guess it would be too complicated to write a kind of organizer which allows to get the John-P-Textures into a(n) FM, right? :erm: In case of new textures used by the author, do they have a separate "space" or is it necessary to overwrite not-used textures (what would make it even more complicated)?
