I never understood the attraction of gym. Why not go do something entertaining like rock climbing, horseriding, hiking or boxing?
Instead you choose to spend hours in a sterile environment, in solitary, repetitive activity.
Time in a gym can pay off in whatever else you do.
I do tons of mountain biking, mostly on advanced trails. If I haven't worked out in a long while I notice a huge difference, regardless of how much biking I've been doing in lieu of going to the gym.

* To the guy sitting on the lat pulldown machine reading the paper for ten minutes: you'll be more comfortable at home.
You shittin' me? Someone actually did that at your gym?
Perfect excuse to get your day's workout by sucker-punching him there and then, methinks. Seriously, wtf!?!

I just started in December. Is that early enough to avoid the wrath of the experienced regulars?

I'd third it, but I'm too busy trying to explain to this young lady followin' me that she doesn't need to use that pec deck 'cause she got
all the chest she needs.

Amateur Season. I want to line them all against the fucking wall.
Sounds kinky.

I dislike everyone at the gym. The only reason why I go there is to play squash. Which makes me particularly hate anyone who goes to group classes (such as RPM or Body Combat/Pump/any other ghey name they decide to call it nowadays). They spend all the time hollering at each others and playing music at insanely loud volumes, which can be pretty annoying to someone trying to play a nice squash game in a court right next to the room where they're performing their insane activities.

My favorites are the boys who come in, pack as much weight on a curl bar as possible, then huff and puff for half an hour doing their curls all wrong. They never actually curl the weight more than a couple of inches- most of the 'lift' is done by them bending over and leaning back. I hope they enjoy their sciatica.
Then they give you the 'what's up' and dash out. Nothing else- just misbegotten curls and a big scene.

A while ago I tired of paying a lot for a gym membership and bought my own barbell/dumbell set and squat rack + bench. I got them for about £160 but I don't need anything more to do a good basic routine so I'd recommend doing that for beginners like what I was!
