I have fddshow installed, for converting video and audio into a playable format on the Xbox 360 - with that I can play the movies in WMP.
So is it possible that it could somehow not be compatible with the game, and be interfering?

It's possible. You could disable or uninstall this program and see if that helps. Honestly though, it doesn't seem like a movie crash, because you guys said you both could not even get into thief, it just crashes right away.

Yea, and as I've said, Thief will run if it's patched with DDFix, only up to the menu.
I tried disabling fddshow for WMP, and it still can play the movies.
I think I have multiple versions of the indeo codecs, though. I had originally installed them from the iv5play.exe on the Thief CD, then tried an alternate version (from somewhere here on the forums or the thief-circle site, not sure - file name was iv5setup.exe). I've uninstalled one of them, I think it was the more recent version, but I can't figure out what to do with the original. None of my uninstaller apps pick it up.

OH, that's true.
I wonder if there is a way to just disable movies entirely? Anyway, I suggest uninstalling all indeo codecs, and reinstalling with either iv5play.exe, or the new one. For uninstalling the codec, try going to Control Panel> System> hardware tab> Device Manager> Sounds, video and game controllers>expand the list and choose Video Codecs. Go to Properties Tab, and find all instances of indeo and "remove" them. Maybe that will do it? (sorry, I'm only going off what I see, I've never actually done this before.) You sday that you run thief with one core, so it can't be that which is freezing thief I don't think.
Also, check ALL of the information (

I just tried what you suggested for the Indeo codec, but it just keeps coming back every time I close the window.
sNeaksieGarrett on 11/3/2009 at 23:05
What do you mean coming back? It doesn't get deleted?
Try remove and then immediately reboot the computer. Maybe it requires a reboot. THou

Yea, I delete it, and close the window, but if I open the window again it's there. It does appear to be gone before I close the window, though.
I rebooted and it's still there.

Odd. What's the point of a remove button if you aren't allowed?
Sorry, I'm out of ideas.
Do you have the "video fix" option enabled in ddfix? there's also the multicore fix.
vertimyst on 12/3/2009 at 17:12
I had disabled the video fix to see if it made a difference, but I enabled it again, and oddly enough, Thief works now!
I have no idea what it is I did, must've been the uninstallation of codecs.
Thanks for your help.

Ah, okay cool. So here's my assessment of what happened:
- you tried playing thief without the ddfix patch. The game crashes. This leads me to believe it is a multicore issue, which leads to:
- With the ddfix patch, you are able to launch thief. However, the videos don't work, and the game crashes. Seems to be a movie crash. You then proceeded to disable and then re-enable the "video fix" for ddfix.
Is this correct? You just mentioned uninstallation of codecs. I thought you were unable? or did you uninstall some other codecs?
