I was thinking it was a dual-core issue, but I didn't even consider the fact that you are running ATI. I think Timeslip's patch was indeed meant for nvidia cards only. IF ddfix isn;t working, and you guys have dual-core, did you guys try the non-ddfix patches? (image cfg trick outlined in the FAQ in this forum for example?)

vertimyst - you do not need DDFix for Intel GMA, it works straight out of the box (as they say) - the graphics problems are with ATI and NVidia. You may need to do the dual-core fix first though, to make it work with your CPU if it is a dual-core one. Try running a fresh install of Thief Gold, and then if that doesn't work, try it again but with running off just one CPU core.

I just tried the imagecfg fix ((
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/hyperthreading/)), but the game still won't start.
Without DDFix, as I've said, thief.exe won't even start - I just get 'Thief: The Dark Project has encountered an error and needs to close' message.
With DDFix, thief.exe starts but freezes immediately with a black screen. Disabling the intro in cam.cfg allows the game to proceed to the menu, and from there I can navigate the menus, and change options, but if I try to start the game (either with or skipping the tutorial) the game simply freezes.
I do have a dual-core processor. I use the alt-tab -> task manager -> set affinity trick with other games (System Shock 2 and Hitman 2 Silent Assassin). But those games run perfectly with only occasional crashes without hyperthreading disabled.

Exact same problem as me,
I've just tried the Gold version. Did the ddfix and even tried the ati thief.exe fix download but freezes in exact same place every time. Just tried the 'enable only 1 processor' as stated above with no luck.

Hmm, that's really weird.
Have you tried safe texture manager uncommenting:

;Some video cards may not work properly with Thief 2
;including the intel 810 and the nVidia RIVA 128.
;
To fix, remove the semicolon from the next line.safe_texture_manager
That's what it looks like in mine. OR was it already like this?

Thanks for your help sNeaksieGarrett,
I just looked at my USER.CFG via notepad and this is the only data in it:
Code:
mission_map 1,2,3,4,5,15,6,7,16,9,17,10,11,12,13,14,18

Sorry! What's wrong with me? I was thinking of thief 2, when clearly this thread is about thief 1.:o That was for thief 2. I guess you could try adding in that line yourself: safe_texture_manager, and save the file.

If you're locking up whenever a movie starts to play (you stated you can get to menu if you disable the intro), then you're likely missing the indeo codec. Either install it off the (first?) cd (I don't recommend), or download the K-Lite codec pack (I do recommend). The best way to test this, is try to open the movies out of the movie directory on the cd/install directory. If they play in windows media player, that's probably not the issue.

Thanks for suggestion :)
Just tried that and the movies can play through WMP :(

If the movies can play in WMP, but not in thief, that doesn't mean you have the codec. I just realized this is faulty... Codecs are what enable videos to play, unless we determine that it is using some other codec but I really don't know.
I would try installing the indeo codecs anyway, or getting that codec pack.... Also, I would suggest using the "lgvid.ax trick." If all that fails, just disable videos for thief.
