But, it pretty much is, isn't it? Even Godzirra would admit to that. I don't see that as hyperbole as much just the plain truth.
And btw, some of the anti-hate is just as bad if not worse than the hate, IMO.
It's dumbed down, but I don't think it's going to be as dumbed down as many games of this era typically are, especially not when you factor in the difficulty and UI customizations.

Depends. Right now, the one thing I'll say that's 100% most definitely dumbed down are the rope arrows. I hate the fact you can only use them in certain places.
Contextual controls? That all depends on how it's implemented. If EM decided to set it up so that you can only mantle, climb, and grab items specifically set by the level designer, then yes, the controls are dumbed down considerably, to the point it'll completely ruin the game.
BUT
If it's set up so that you can mantle and climb on anything that you should be able to climb on (like being able to stack crates then shimmy up them and whatnot), then it's not so much that it's been dumbed down as it's been changed around a bit. No, you can't specifically jump anymore, but you can still achieve the same end results in new Thief as you could in old. The whole point is that you should able to explore as freely as you could before (barring rope arrows). If you can, then it's not necessarily worse. Just different.
Story and whatnot? I'll admit new Basso is kinda painful, but new Garrett has the potential to be interesting in his own way (heavy eye liner aside). As far as I'm concerned, old Garrett's story ended with Thief 3, and this game is someone else's retelling of the same character. Yeah, it would've been nice to have Stephen Russell but, but...they nixed him for not entirely good reasons. Still, I'm willing to give everything here a chance. YMMV.
It's like I said way before, some things that sound like horrible changes on paper end up not being much different in practice. It was about the same way with DX:HR. What we were handed sounded like a hand-holding console kiddy corridor shooter with a bunch of cheesy Square Enix rendered cutscenes slathered on top. What we got was a solid Deus Ex game. The same might happen here. This is why I'm taking everything with a grain of salt. The bad stuff might not be so bad, and the good stuff could very well be occasional chunks of semi-polished diamonds in a giant load of poop. Who knows. What EM has shown us thus far swings wildly between very promising and WTF were they thinking. So is it dumbed down? Some things are, but it could just be one or two concessions that won't be enough to kill the game entirely depending on how good the rest is.
...we'll see. Right now, I'm pretty damn neutral.

With everything turned off, I agree, but that still isn't saying very much with how utterly horrid the standard is. It's like saying EM's cooking won't taste as bad as the rotting possum carcass laying by the road.
That said, I haven't completely written the game off, I'll wait a couple years for all of the patches, mods, and DLC, so when the inevitable GOTY edition comes out, perhaps it will be worth 8 dollars.
