A filthy mind is it's own reward?

You can't ignore SHODANs original programming. Originally it was programmed with a female voice. A lot of IT systems use a female voice as its usually seen as gentler and more "caring" than a male voice (yes I know that its stereotypical, etc).
Actually, I don't think it's based only on stereotypes. I recently read somewhere about a study where they looked at activity in the brain when the human ear hears a male voice versus a female voice.
With the female voice, the activity was concentrated much more in the part of the brain responsible for recognizing and appreciating music. It would make sense then that they would go for a female voice if they wanted something that made for more "easy listening", so to speak.

Yeah and I read a study that said the male brain doesn't take well to female voices because they tend to be too high pitched and are therefore subconsciously regarded as an annoyance.
I for one can accept both studies as being completely true. It just depends on the woman in question.

Hearing a soothing female voice is something many engineers dream of.
*sound of me hi-fiving Homer Simpson and other anachronisms*
Anyway, I remember reading that casting Terri Brosius wasn't an afterthought for the CD version of the game or something. The disk version is actually the 'port' so to speak. Which means they had a female voice for the character and still kept all the 'it' (and I think someone even calls Shodan 'he') dialogue and voice acting.
Make of that what you will.
(and damn I wish I could scrub the internet of old bad art, mine in particular)

I remember reading ages ago that that was also the reasoning behind the 'Bitching Betty' voices in combat aircraft etc. being female - the pilot was more likely to take notice of them in a high-stress situation.
