Hi there
I have just built up a new computer just to play Thief 1, 2 & 3 on as below
M/board - Asus P5E3 Premium WiFi-AP @n
Ram - Corsair DDR3 PC3-8500 (533Mhz) 1024MB x 4
Cpu - Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Mhz
Video - HIS IceQ4+ Radeon HD4870 (Catalyst driver version 9.7)
Monitor - Samsung SyncMaster 2333sw (1920 x 1080 at 60Hz, 32bit color)
HDD - Western Digital Caviar 320 Gb Sata
O/S - Windows Vista home Premium 32 bit
All drivers are the latest available as at the 11 Aug 2009
As this is my first attempt to install Thief onto a 64 bit machine im not sure what issues are likely to come up or even what patches to apply to get the most from the widescreen if that even works
Any heads up would be appreciated

Hi Viper,
There shouldn't be any extra problems with your 64-bit OS - Thief runs just as "well" in it as in normal 32-bit ones. You'll definitely need to take care of the hyperthreading issue, but DDFix can take care of that.
I'd give DDFix a go and see if you can get it working fine with that, and if so then go for the widescreen patch on top.
Edit - Since you mentioned Thief III, you'll need to fix the hyperthreading issue for that as well - you can either do this with the command line / bat files, or with (

If you want 100% compatibility I would have gone for 32bit version of Xp... but see how you go...

Well after all my stuffing about to get Thief working on 64 bit windows I found that Doom wont install on 64 bit so there goes any ideas about playing dark mod games
So I now have a 32 bit version of Vista home premium installed plus all the latest drivers etc
I have installed ddfix into the Thief and Thief2 folders and both now work fine
do I need to install ddfix into the T2X folder as well

If you're really building a machine strictly for the Thief games, you can buy something a whole hell of a lot cheaper than what's above. And, by buying older hardware, you dodge all the hyperthreading/ddifx type issues that usually come up in the process. A PC I bought in 2005 had an Athlon 64 3200+ processor, and a Radeon 9800 pro video card, and it ran all the Thief games beautifully. You could probably pick all that up on Ebay now for under 100 bucks.

I think you should consider using an single core processor with windows XP. My old computer has a dual core processor and XP. Thief worked fine for a couple of years but I always had to change my affintiy settings to single core. As I got more and more into dromED I believe the constant use of only one processor was damaging it. The computer still runs but the processor temperature goes way up when I run single core and the computer shuts down just after a few minutes of gameplay. Eventually it started overheating in dual core also.
Windows 7 should be released October or November. If you can hold off on a new computer purchase you will be saving money by not having to upgrade from the god awful VISTA.
Buying used on Ebay sounds like a good idea to me. Used single core Dell computers going for $75.

If your refering to the cpu then sorry but thats completly wrong, the majority of apps these days still only use 1 core. Think about what you just said and then think how many cpu's would be reported fault - its never happened..:cheeky:

Even so, if you were to build a machine with a single core processor, what's the fastest one available these days?

Amd FX-57, but your gonna have a hell of a job finding one and you'll need a and old socket 939 mobo and DDR1 memory.
