known steam issue, see (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733) the main topic.

if you have the steam version, you will have to manually copy the game to some place that is not monitored by steam, and patch and play the copy.
nothing I can do about it, this is just the way steam works.

If Steam reverts some files to their old versions and breaks game menu this way, you don't need to copy the game somewhere to avoid this. You can go to Steam library, right-click on Thief Gold (or Thief 2), choose Properties, then go to to Updates tab and choose 'Do not update automatically'. It's not like we're expecting a Thief patch to come out any minute ;)
BTW, it would be great if they added Steam Cloud support to sync your save games and bindings in the cloud to play from different PCs for example. Steam Auto cloud support can be added to the game in a matter of minutes, all it takes is to specify a path where save games are stored and what type of files to synchronize, that's all. But alas, I doubt that Square Enix people would bother with this old franchise while Valve employees won't interfere with this stuff unless specifically asked by Square Enix people who won't bother :tsktsk:

as long as it disables the steam file integrity checks, yeah, it should work without copying the game.

had to take game files out of steam folder to resolve that issue. resolved completely thanks alot.
couple other small issues i hope to resolve. first, hard to descibe but screen seems to shake a small amount intermittently. only noticable when walking slowly because it is quite slight but definitely happening. it is not a flicker or a flash at all, no other anomolies present. screen just seems to shake left and right very quickly intermitently. not a low framerate issue. i have high end machine disabled crossfire. game plays perfect and is not a big issue really but id like to resolve.
also, stereo channels reversed for left and right front. when i goto audio menu and reverse channels it works but setting not saved and reverts back, any way to fix the setting? thanks alot.

That sounds like you may not have permission to overwrite the bindings file, which you should. I hope you didn't move the install out of Steam and into somewhere under Program Files? That has its own set of problems and is discouraged. I recommend something simple like C:\Games\Thief 2 or similar.

no not in program files the install in C:\games. all other settings in menu save no problem. is there no way to set it in a configuration file?

Sure, they are stored in user.bnd which you can open and modify with any text editor. But the file should be writeable by the game too, so make sure it didn't somehow get set to read-only.

hmmm.. first, let's make sure you are running a properly patched game - that means a clean (steam) install that has been copied to C:\games and THEN patched with TFix (if you don't do it this way there is still some chance steam will block something and the patches will not be fully applied).
if you do, post your thief.log and your cam_ext.cfg, maybe I'll have an idea or two. also, you could try to make a video and share it, so we could see that jerkiness in action.
