First of all, I am sorry, if what I present in this thread is common knowledge. I have been following the forums quite a bit, but you can't catch everything. Also, I am not quite sure, if this warrants for it's own thread, but here it goes anyways.

The article is in Finnish. This is just one journo's opinions here, but I found them interesting. Here's the main points:
* Thief is not Assassin's Creed. The journo died multiple times by falling off roofs, not grabbing ladders properly and generally failing at jumping. Conclusion: the handholding with all the context-sensitivity etc. might not be as bad as thought.
* The journo says Basso gives Garrett missions,
which he can perform in any order he wants. A sizeable difference to the former games.
* The Graven's leader is Ryan. Garrett is drawn into the whole socio-political story from the side. The journo does mention that Garrett seems to steal from the rich&bad folk, which to my ears sounds a bit off (imo, Garrett should steal from anyone, he just targets rich people for the obvious reason that they have most to steal from).
* The city seems very grim and desperate. Confirmed locations: Dayport, The Old Quarter, Cathedral, Stonemarket, South Quarter, Docks ja Auldale.
* The journo concludes that playing Thief was satisfactory because Garrett felt mortal and him dying many times were direct punishment from him playing bad.
There's going to be part 2 of the hands-on posted in the near future.

I thought it was Orion?
@Domey: Maybe it's sidequests and certain parts of the storyline where the order doesn't matter so much?

Maybe it's O'Ryan? Irish Thief roots, maybe...? (;))
Thanks for the link. See something good, get excited; see something bad, get depressed. It's a never-ending cycle. Need some Old City, Pagan lithium, I do. Who's supplying right now? Gotta go see my fence....he'll know.

The way it sounds, it's less like jumping and climbing are so contextual you can only do certain things in certain places, so much as you're just mantling on and off of everything. Like if you come to a ledge, you press a button, and you hop down to hang off the ledge so you can climb back up or down. Run at it, you jump, and have to hit the mantle button to grab onto something, otherwise you fall to your death.
If this is the case, then it's really not all that bad. Different, but not as terrible as I first thought.

Unfortunately it's not that easy (or at least it wasn't a month ago). It's a lot like AC when concerning the "free running" button, Garrett does mantle or jump and vault over things when it's activated (maybe not as independent of momentum as in AC where you can basically jump the longest distance no matter if from standing or running). There is also a drop button (the same as "cancel/abort") like in AC, but the main problem back then was the arbitrariness of those sweet spots. Sometimes a gap looked like Garrett could jump over it but couldn't. I even found one place where I couldn't fall down no matter what I tried, it was like an invisible wall. They said it's one of the main issues on the to-do list but no one can know how the final result will look.
By now I even wonder which games with the same amount of detail still provide oldschool free-form movement. Does anyone of you guys know? I hardly play (modern) games.

The uprising leader's name is Orion, not Ryan. And the City Hub area is what the journo was playing in. That's where the player is between the main over-arching linear narrative story missions. The Hub gives the player a bunch of optional side quests and gives the player a little more background on the world and events.

Hopefully. I enjoyed doing them in TDS.

The Batman: Arkham X games come fairly close. You have a great deal of control over your character, though they tend to be a bit less specific about certain movements.
