I bought a HD4850 Toxic yesterday and went on installing it. After some faffing about (the Catalyst 8.8 driver don't seem to sit well with it at all) I've got the 8.7 drivers running, but the CPU is running at 100% on 'Hardware interrupts' or so says Process Explorer. WTF is going on there?

The latest catalyst is 8.8 - uninstall 8.7 and reinstall the 8.8's and then see hwo you go.

Oh, I originally installed the 8.8 drivers, but there appeared to be some issue with the control panel software.

Doesn't change a thing. Moreover, the Control Panel says "The features in ATI Catalyst Control Center Basic View doesn't support the currently active graphics processor."
There's a button to launch it in Advanced mode, but it doesn't do a thing.

Does that ring any bell?

Thats not an error ive seen before - but from the looks of it thats very serious - can I assume that you completely uninstalled ccc8.7 and then ran nasty file remover - then installed ccc8.8...?
And then un-installed and re-installed .net 2.0.
You should
not be getting the errors your getting, either there is something wrong wiht you windows installation or your card is faulty and needs to be RMA'd
I googled " Exception Called by: ATI.ACE.MOM " and found the following results - (
