Hey folks, I just bought an Oculus Rift+Touch, and my 2-year old GTX 960 isn't quite up to the task of running most new VR games very well at all. So I'm in the market for a new card. I want something that'll be a significant upgrade over my current card and mean I don't have to worry about upgrading again for a couple years, but I also don't wanna spend crazy money! Preferably under €300, but my absolute limit is €400. As I understand it the GTX 1050 isn't that big of an upgrade over 960, and the 1070 ones seem to be way too expensive for my liking, so I got my eye on the (

Also I'm totally open to other suggestions, whether it's Nvidia or AMD. Gotta say I'm a big fan of GeForce Experience's videorecording-feature tho, which is why I'm leaning towards Nvidia. I don't even know if AMD has anything similar.

I've had a quick look around and have asked on a different forum. The GTX 1060 wouldn't be bad, but if you can find a GTX 1070 that's under €400, it's worth the additional cost.
If I get any more information, I'll let you know, though it'll all be second-hand info only.

Thanks! I take it you have a 1070?

I've got an 1080.

Good God.

Right, I did some research, and it seems that the word on the street (youtube) is "don't get a GTX 1060, get an AMD RX 480". Or, if I'm gonna get something better, go for a GTX 1070.
Thirith on 16/3/2017 at 21:39
Yeah, that's also what people on that other forum have said, e.g. "I've heard the RX 480 is actually comparable to a GTX 1060 at a lower price... Another alternative would be to look at the used market; probably lots of people selling their 1070s and upgrading to the new 1080ti."

Quick P.S. re the 1060: if you do get that one, apparently it's very much advisable to go for the 6GB one, not the one that has 3GB.

Think this bears repeating: if you want to upgrade, see if you can wait until AMD and nVidia fire their next salvo. The 20xx GPUs should be out around May*, and AMD should be able to return fire around the same timeframe. Market dynamics, more bang for your buck.
*Unconfirmed, but it should be summer 2017 as far as their roadmap goes.

Actually, scratch that. New AMD Vega cards/5xx refresh are definitely happening between now and May. Hold off upgrading for now.
