The term fanboy is overused, and it's silly, seeing as how everyone in the world is a "fanboy" of something. (Not just video games.)

I dunno, maybe everyone disagrees with me, but take Doom 3 for example. It may have deviated from the doom formula, but it was a good (decent?) game in
it's own right. In fact I'd say it took the series in a better direction. These days people don't want arcadey gameplay (ok, as much, there's still a market for that out there), they want story-based experiences. Which is what Doom 3 provided, even if it was lame. (However, I still like the old doom games, it's just a different experience than what you expect nowadays. I could see a more acadey doom, but it'd have to be separate from the true sequels I think.)
Doom 3 is a pretty bad example with which to make your point, as the main complaint made against it was that it wasn't "modern"
enough when compared to the original
Doom. Remember all the complaints about how you couldn't lean, crawl, the weapons were simplistic, the environments weren't open enough, etc?
Doom 3 was seen as being too locked into archaic FPS practices in all the worst possible ways.

I never played Doom 3, but as far as I remember the main complaint was that it was too dark compared to the original (which was, most of the time, very bright).
Anyway, I find that Doom (single player) is still a lot more fun to play today than almost all modern FPS.
