G'day'
This is my first post on this forum, hopfully the first of many.
It's real sad but forums are about the extent of my social life besides work, and being as I work for myself I don't get to meet too many people there either:tsktsk: as I said...sad!
I'm happy enough though cause I got my P.C and I've just bought Morrowind.:D
O.K so I've started out as a Nord/Monk which annoys me a bit cause I like the melee, but I guess I'll just have to work on broadsword and axe points cause there's no way I'm going around doing unarmed combat.
I've done the first couple of quests for the fighters guild, killed some rats then went to the mines outside Belmora, killing the two poachers wasn't too easy though I had to keep running back through the door and resting, is this right?
What sort of damage should I be doing starting out? I've got a broadsword that's worth 80gp and does approx 2-18 damage slash etc... I'm not wearing much armour cause my stats say I'm better off without it, is this true?
One other thing is that the game can run a little bit sluggish, I've got a 2.2 CPU with 512 RAM and an FX5200 GPU, is there anything in game I can tweek to make it run a bit smoother.
Thanks for reading and any feed back will be well appreciated.
Markus.

Well G'day' to you too! :D
I dont know how you like to play but i definately prefer light armour or heavy armour in Morrowind. Without armour you have to rely too much on dodging attacks (which can be made easier by certain magical rings ;) ).
Also you miss out on enchanted armour and some of the best items in the game.
I'm guessing your better off without armour because you have a higher unarmoured skill than any of your armour skills (check your stats)
Your pc is very similar to mine and the game seems to work fine on whatever settings you want (aside from crahing after quicksaves, random closings of the game screen and freezing as I'm fighting a really tough battle)
One of my early characters had trouble with those damn miners
There not that tough but they swing those pickaxes well! If your quick you can take em out easily, but if you get hurt in any situation - rest in safe place - return and fight - is a good idea. You may want to carry some restore health potions for extra help.
Hope any of this helps!
make sure you check out threads on 'code book' fighters quest.
My solution was to do all the fighters guild quests up to the code book, then when I persuaded Solttide up to 70% and got the code book, i went straight to sugar lips habasi and asked to join the thieves guild - BEFORE GIVING EIDIS FIRE EYE THE CODE BOOK
The Morrowind FPS Optimizer can provide some help. I've just done a number of upgrades to my PC, going from AIW Radeon to Radeon 9600XT gave me about 2 FPS boost, and from 384 Meg to 640 Meg gave me another 5 or so, I now get 30 - 60 FPS indoors and 8 - 16 outside. Processor seems to be the key (which my system lacks), but by tweaking as much as you can (try (
http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide&dId=316) Tweaktown's guide) your 2.2 GHz should be ok.
Unarmed combat can be terribly useful if you use it right, npcs certainly use it enough for me to reach for the quickload key two or three times per fight. Combine it with initial attribute lowering attacks to reduce enemies maximum fatigue. At some stage you will need weapons with other forms of damage too though.

A few quick and rather obvious performance fixes:
Use 600x800 resolution
Turn off real time shadows
Turn down the AI distance thingy
And also one which improved loading speeds beyond recognition on my machine (900 mHz processor, 32 mB graphics card, 512 mB RAM)-
Get a 7200 rpm hard drive
This last one is a little drastic, but I was buying a new hdd anyway- previously I had 6 gb in total, on two ancient hdds. Definitely needed more space!
As to crashing while in combat, I vaguely remember someone posting about pinpointing the exact circumstances when this occurred on his/her machine- IIRC it was when swinging a weapon while stepping backwards. The moral of the story- never retreat! never surrender! ;)
Enjoy the game and welcome to ttlg

Doesnt help the crashing I get. Since it happens randomly when I enter a new cell or when I take out meh sword or when I initiate a conversation etc etc.. The only pinpoint thingy I can show is that the game crashes once in a hour or 2. Although I have gotten some long game sittings too (massive 3 hours and more!).
About tweaking for focaulteco, Id increase the cell buffers a bit so you wont get the loading
all the time. Your puter should run the game pretty well, might help if you limit the fps to 50 or 60, at least helped a bit here.

My Morrowind is on the XBox, so I don't have those sort of PC problems (I've got a whole different set ;) ) but as general PC related issues go, I run a pretty tight ship (older PC)... so here's some things to look at or think on:
1) remove anything from memory that you don't need... everyone likes to pre-load their crap... close down all the pre-launchers for software (like Winamp, Realaudio, etc does).... Virus Scanners and what not (while in the game anyway). Every bit of resource helps.
2) Go on a witchhunt for AdWare, Spyware, and Viruses. All of the above can be running on your system and you may not know it (esp. if you use Internet Explorer and/or Outllook). All of those type of things are known to cause system slowdown, instability, reboots, the works. AdAware, Spybot S&D, AVG... and any other legitimate resource you can lay your hands on.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.... there are several resources online that'll tell you what you really need to have running... myself it's next to nothing most of the time, and my old beast runs most things pretty well (though I'd never be able to run Morrowind on this monster, hence the XBox :thumb: )

I've even heard people suggest that after loading Morrowind you need to Alt-Tab out and kill off explorer, but I think that seems a little drastic for anyone with 512 Meg or more. I run Mozilla Firebird and sometimes a few Bit Torrents (legal ones, of course) - between them totalling 60 Meg - in the background without reducing frame rate beyond the already low figure.

Yeah I love all these progs, I swore blind that I was spyware free but Spybot gave me a big shock.

Don't forget to close explorer. What? Internet Explorer? Nope! Hit Ctrl, Alt and Delete, then (if you're using XP) click the processes tab. You'll find 'explorer.exe' there. Close that (end process). If you're running an older computer, it should help since explorer uses anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000k of memory.
Myoldnamebroke on 31/1/2004 at 22:51
Except that's Windows Explorer - so it's essentially Windows itself. Which means it automatically reloads itself when you close the process.
RyushiBlade on 1/2/2004 at 00:39
Not if you do it manually. It only reloads if it crashes. I close explorer all the time. If you didn't already bring up Morrowind Launcher before hand, just stay in the task manager and choose File > New Task (Run...)
