Ok, the only reason I'm posting is because of moop's last comment
Quote:
our first experience with DX vicariously through new players such as yourself is always a blast of nostalgia.
That said, I'm (embarrassingly) having problems at the beginning.
Guards patrolling... should I
a) Shoot them ... but ammunition is VERY limited, so this is not really an option.
b) Stun them with the stun-gun... again, not much amunition
c) Avoid them altogether ... this seems the most logical option
d) ?? I don't know....tickle them..??
I would very much like to figure this out on my own, but moop's comments enticed me to post here for those who would like to follow along. I'm relatively certain there will be times where I need some hints from veteran players.
But, please, NO SPOILERS!!!!
...I know, pointless post... sorry. :)

Do both. Figure it out on your own and post how you played here. :)

Can we make this our OWN nostalgia thread? When I did that very distinct part, I tried being sneaky at first, the guards are few and far in between and I had Thief experience. I just hid behind a bush or something and they walked right passed me and I used the Cattle Prod to stun them.
It worked fine for a while until some of them detected me. Lets keep in mind our friend JC sucks at any combat at that time so any time that I was detected I took a couple painful bullets.
I then switched to sniping with the crossbow, if done right they're hit by the poison darts, start running to you, and after 2-3 doses are low health and start running away from you. If the distance is big enough they'll just run like idiots and never get close enough to you to shoot you.
That was by first play through and how I did that part. I missed some things but I won't mention them yet.
So how did everyone here do on the their attempt? Let's keep the same pace as bassmanret and reveal our stories as well.
(I forgot a lot of parts of my play through of DX, level 1 is pretty clear but after that I just did my best my own way.)

Well, I just finished the first mission! :thumb: A little tricky, but fun! I tried to stealth my way through it, but ended up killing the three terrorists just outside the room Gunther was in. I don't see how anyone could complete the mission without having to deal with those three in some way.
On my way to the docks, I think there were some things I missed due to my direct approach (nearly straight north).
Anyway, I took what I think must have been the "back way" into the Statue, climbing up a stack of crates and boxes, then sneaking my way past the terrorists without firing a shot.
I saved just before releasing Gunther, so I'm going to go back and play again so I can see how it plays out if I DON'T give Gunther my pistol (don't know why I did that??).
Now, on to mission #2!!! :)

You didn't give him your laser-modded one, did you?

Well since you've finished, I can post how I usually handle the Liberty Island mission -
I use the first few missions to build up a cache of ammunition, but if you become more skillful, you will find ways to solve most problems in the game without relying on one weapon type anyway. This means I don't really use the pistol on liberty island, preferring instead to run up behind any NSF guard foolish enough to patrol a route where they can't be seen by other guards. If you get too close, they can hear your footsteps, so I crouch before then. Then, I use the Baton and whack them in the back of the head, knocking them unconscious. Make sure if you do this that you don't hit their arm instead, or they'll turn around and put a slug between your eyes.
Regarding Gunther: If you don't want to give him your pistol, but you still want to "make him happy," you can drop your gear before you talk to him, but keep your knife. He'll be happy with that, and you get to keep your pistol. Losing equipment which you've modified isn't ever a good option.
My recommendation for you is that you should learn how to crouch. Turning off the "toggle crouch" option is slightly more difficult (if you haven't played many FPS games), but once you're used to it, it will probably prevent some panic-moments later.

There's so many guns I don't have a problem with Gunther. There's also a Stealth Pistol in Liberty Island, I like using that, as well as probably keeping a few mods for that. I also use the crossbow so the normal pistol can be easily parted with.
So did you find the sunken boat?

On liberty Island, I can complete it by Killing nobody and knocking out nobody :) Complete *Ghost* (played tooo much thief lately)
When I do go around using weapons, I use the almighty baton :D
Or there is this little trick which I can do quite well. run around liberty island and attract EVERYBODIES (NSF) Attention. mind not to get hit while running away. lure them neat a security robot and *POW*. hide in the sea to keep your head down from bullets :joke:
I'm not sure if letting the security bots kill the NSF counts toward the "player is violent" game-flags, but that could affect how Paul treats you later in the game.
