I'm a geek.
And as a geek it is my solemn duty to open a thread about the cybermen in the new series of Doctor Who.
In short; They Rock!!!!
Slightly longer; Shame about the flared trousers though...
And the bit that REALLY defines me as a geek; They've gon back to the cyberman voice they had in the 2nd doctor's time! YAY!
(the trousers are still quite a problem though...)

I'm a couple of episodes behind in this series (*gasp*), so I haven't seen them yet. It took a while for me to take to Wavey Davey Tennant - when he's acting all hard and serious, it doesn't seem quite as convincing as Christopher Ecclescake ("WHY DON'T YOU JUST DIE!") He's a bit whimsical too ... but I suppose that's closer to the olden days really. Billie is still great, curiously.
So, in this series ... (spoilers ahoy)
#1 - I found this a bit rubbish, unfortunately. They get top marks for having CAT NUNS that didn't look utterly ludicrous and I suppose it was nice to see The Face of Bo again. I didn't think the reappearance of Cassandra really worked though (although the body-switching stuff was fairly entertaining). Russell T's horrible obsession with Deus Ex Machina appeared once again and produced a thoroughly lame ending. I know this show is partly for DA KIDZ, but let's at least make an effort beyond WELL THE MAGICAL DRUGS CURED THEM ALL.
#2 - This was better! Orange Matrix-monks were a bit silly, but not too bad. Shame they were slightly underused (where DID the armed monks that were surrounding the house go?) Werewolf bloke was pretty ace. Queen Victoria = WEREWOLF is funny. Again, the pacing seem a bit weird with a rushed ending (maybe that's a side-effect of 45 min episodes though).
#3 - The most recent one I've seen and easily my favourite. Also the first one I've seen not written by Russell Davis ... HMMMM. Anyway, Dr Who + Demon Headmaster + Dark Season + Grange Hill = what's not to like? The guy from Buffy was an excellent baddie (and made me wonder when THE MASTER is going to appear in this new Who). Even K9 managed not to be too annoying. Micky is developing into reasonable comic relief with some decent lines.
#4 looks like it has ROBOTIC FOPS, so that must surely be good. And #5, of course, has those pesky Cybermen. Yay!

The Sci-Fi channel just began airing the first season of the most recent run over here. I've never watched any of the earlier incarnations but the few episodes I've seen of this series are pretty fun.
Plus Rose is pretty hot and honestly that's good enough for me these days.

Christopher Ecclescake
Hey I thought I made that up :(
Also much fun was had by all watching Barty go and meet his dad's friends.

Season two hasn't aired in canada yet but after watching season one, never saw an episode of the original, I ended up liking any episode not written by Russell T. Davis. The ones written by him I really didn't like at all (ie flattulent aliens, etc...) to me they just seemed like such a wasted opportunity and time considering you have a device that can go anywhere in space/time and you decide to do stories about if reality tv ruled the world. :weird:

CLOCKWORK robotic fops, and Sophia Myles in 18th century french clothing.
I honestly like Tennant a little bit more than Ecclestone, when he goes into angry Doctor mode it feels much more cold and furious than Ecclestone's manic lashing out. Of course, my only previous exposure to The Doctor is the Fox movie with Paul McGann, so clearly I know nothing.

Is everyone here a 'new' doctor who fan? (I've been into drwho for about 5 years now.)
Yes this is sad...very...VERY...sad

When I was very young I used to like Doctor Who and watched mostly the Tom Baker series and the hilarious films with Peter Cushing of all people.
THEY'RE TURNING BEDFORDSHIRE INTO A HUGE MINING COLONY
but seriously the new stuff is alright.

The 3rd doctor Jon Pertwee, and the Brigadier! Now that was the true essence of Dr who.

Quite so!
Another non-Russell T episode, another one I greatly enjoyed. Clearly he should stick to overseeing the project and keep his fingers away from the scripts. Obviously it was all just a weak-ish excuse to have an episode in 17th Century France with clockwork Robo-fops, but rather well executed I thought. More importantly; it's just a fantastic basis for a Dr Who episode. Very Adam Ant.
AND THAT'S HOW YOU WRITE AN ENDING, DAVIS
Is Stephen Fry still writing one in this series? He was down for doing episode 11, but I've since heard he wasn't able to do it in the end :(

Kind of. I've seen some of the oldies, but only via haphazard repeats on BBC2. In a way that's good, it means I won't ever be going OH GOD WHAT DID THEY DO THE DOCTOR WOULD NEVER SNOG WOMEN AND/OR OTHER UPDATED CHARACTERISTIC.
Really, really hoping The Master appears at some point. However, they did Daleks last series .. Cybermen this series. Perhaps it's one 'classic' baddie per season.
