Well, my brand spanking new computer arrived and it works like a charm, except for one major issue...
My monitor is an old 15" CRT monitor with a VGA connector. The graphics card is an nVidia 8800 GTX with only DVI slots. I've plugged the monitor into the graphics card using a VGA-to-DVI adaptor. When I first turned the PC on, it seemed fine for 10 mins or so, then everything went really distorted on the monitor. It varies from resolution to resolution, but the only res where everything is visible and readable is 640x480. This seems totally independent of software. On other resolutions, the screen shrinks in from the vertical edges, pincushions, turns grey, has white diagonal lines all over it, and other such weirdness. Also, the image blurs as if it's out of register.
If I change the refresh rate to anything other than 60, it messes it up in the same way.
Any ideas, or do I need a new monitor? Thanks in advance!

You should find a used crt monitor about and do some testing. See if the results are the same. Although I think its time to choose a new LCD. ;)
'15 inch eh, 800x600 or 1024x768 highest? :p I believe a 8800 gtx can achieve a much higher rez.

lol, at the mo all it's achieving is 640x480. If I listen carefully I can hear it begging to be let out to play... :D
Well I have ordered a new monitor - 22" LCD with a DVI connector so that oughta do the trick! I tried a different CRT as well and got Frequency Out of Range, so it looks like its a compatability issue.

well I got my new monitor, fired up Quake 4, nearly fainted! I had no idea it could look that crisp and detailed! I could make out every pore on my marine buddies' faces!

not all DVI-VGA adapter plugs are created equal, they have differing pin configurations for DVI-I and others (IIRC). It may be you had the wrong one.
