Been playing this for over a week. I forgot how long Half-life was. It really makes it an obvious bummer that singleplayer shooter games are not anywhere near as long as this anymore.
Frankly, that's something I don't miss. IMO it's a rare long FPS that doesn't feel padded. With other types of games I don't mind, but I prefer FPSes that are better paced, and that's so rarely the case with a long one.

While I think the sound effects in BM are generally great, there are a few that stand out like sore thumbs. For instance the explosion sounds are pathetic to put it mildly, Gordon's talking is louder and more boomy. And BM's crowbar feels awfully weak to me, especially when I hit enemies with it. In HL1 it makes a loud meaty thump while in HL2/BM it hardly makes any noise. While the latter is certainly more realistic, realism hasn't proved to be an effective deciding point for gameplay or aesthetic design in video games, as far as my opinion goes in any case.
But if I had to choose one sound detail that stands out as being great, I choose the ambient sounds that play at parts in Blast Pit, such as the big, circular corridor where you end up crashing your tram in front of the giant pool of toxic waste. It adds so much atmosphere to that place, truly makes me feel like the ceiling is about to come crashing down.
At the moment I'm about to complete On a Rail, I'll continue playing tonight. Definitely not looking forward to Apprehension, if it is anything similar to HL1's version.

Wait what

There's no Gordon talking. I think he was suggesting that Gordon's silence is louder than the grenade booms, which, although an exaggeration, isn't far off. They are tiny and pathetic.

Yeah the sound balancing isn't the best. Probably indicates the piecemeal way it was put together.
Anyway, pretty cool mod. Haven't finished it yet. I am aware that certain bits are shortened compared to the original, but each new bit is still 'Damn. More? Where's the end?!'. Has it really been that long since I played it? Apparently.
Also, I don't Know who it was said the Osprey drops stop after a while. I shot my way through five or six waves on easy before my ammo gave out and they just kept on coming.
You're obviously meant to just run through that bit as best you can, even though everyone stops what they're doing and shoots at you.

Bingo. I exaggerate for an effect. :p

Just played my first session of Half-Life. Prepare for a review from Bizzaro World where Black Mesa came out before Half Life.
Well, it's like Black Mesa... except a hell of a lot UGLIER! The music isn't as good either, remember the part in Black Mesa where you put on your suit and a kick-ass techno song kicks in? They replaced that with a part where you put on your suit and a lame-ass techo song kicks in. Tsk. Tsk. They totally messed up the sound effects as well. At that part in Black Mesa where one of the computers go BLEEP, in Half-Life that same computer goes BLOOP. OH AND GET THIS they got rid of almost all the instances of Ctrl jumping! Talk about DUMBING DOWN
Ok but seriously, I'm enjoying it. It's way easier on Normal difficulty than BM was but somehow I'm finding it a lot more unnerving. Hearing the monster sounds from a nearby room and knowing I'll have to go in there eventually really gets under my skin. Extremely creepy. The music is somehow more ominous as well, and might well be better than that in BM. The game is a lot shorter than BM though, isn't it? I just played for 73 minutes and made it to "We Got Hostiles". Can't remember exactly but it feels like in BM it took me a few hours to get there. Then again I did a lot more exploring and looking around in BM and the movement speed being set to Always Run in HL might have something to do with it as well.

WHAT
Okay, who else lives in Finland? Vasquez? Could you visit henke and beat him up for those of us who actually prefer the original because of, I dunno,
taste!? Preferably with a huge-ass red crowbar? Thanks.
Kidding. But not about the getting someone to beat you up part.

Whoever decided to replace the epic alarm klaxon after the event with that tinny alarm bell is the one who needs a beating. The former says "Shit has gone to hell". The latter says "Fire drill!".

Off topic, but my landlord once decided to fit an industrial klaxon as a fire alarm. I can attest that waking up to one of those feels like the world is ending.
