i don't think that term means what you think it means

Back when Half-Life was released it completely blew me away and it remains one of my best gaming experiences ever, i'm counting on playing Black Mesa to be a big nostalgia injection for me. :)
And i too recommend playing the original if you haven't.

Yea i do think they really missed their window of opportunity... by like, 5 years.
WTF is the "window of opportunity" for a
remake? What does that even mean in this context?
Yakoob on 3/9/2012 at 00:33
It means if they released it 5 years ago it would have been "the shit" but now, while still a laudible effort, wont be as big as popular as it could have been. As someone on another forum said:

So we get to play through (some of) a 10 year old game using 6 year old engine. I'm much less excited for this now.

using 6 year old engine.
Pfft. Play Portal 2 and/or CS:GO to see that the current iteration of Source is "with the times".

So technology whores aren't as excited. Boo hoo. It's still having higher-res assets thrown at it than it ever did six years ago.

Yes, which makes up the majority of FPS gamers if you haven't noticed. Hence, missed window of opportunity. I'm not saying it's not gonna be good or worth playing, just that it could have had much bigger reception, "wow" factor, and success several years back.
EDIT: There is also the fact that HL1/2 modding scene is no longer as big or renowned as it used to be. Back when HL1 was still somewhat fresh and HL2 just came out, there was much hype and buzz the team could have capitalized on. Now, the audience for HL2 mods is much smaller.

but portal technology was even in Unreal Engine 1
You are woefully ignorant of the difference between Unreal's portals and Portal's portals.

Right, which is why Dear Esther ended up completely ignored. And never mind that this isn't just any random mod, but a remake of one of the most successful FPSs in the history of PC gaming.
Yakoob on 3/9/2012 at 03:12
Wait, are you really arguing that mod hype today is just as big as it used to be in the HL1 / early HL2 days? Really?
