This is something that really gets up my nose...

Ahem. Sorry, it's just that, as a game designer, that really annoys me. It's unrealistic that you CAN'T be good at more than one thing IMO. I can play cricket, and footy, and can build a motor from scrap. If there was magic and I lived in a dungeon, maybe I'd learn magic, swordsmanship and pick-pocketing. Grrr...
Ahem, sorry, I couldn't tell the reviewer how annoyed I was at that comment, and I needed to get it out in the open :).

Arx review in Finlands leading mag (
http://www.pelit.fi) Pelit. Since I really cant be arsed to translate the whole thing I quote the English summary:
Quote:
Summary:Arx Fatalis is a surprise, because it's really as good as it promised to be. As an Underworld fan, Arx is just what I needed: a counter effect to the bland modern games designed to be played by idjuts. Only the fighting was far, far too unchallenging. More!
+Appealing to eye
+Athmosphere
+Good storyline
+Real problem solving
-Perhaps worst voice acting of the year
-Fighting too easy
90/100 + Pelit Recommends
-Nnirvi
Note: Nnirvi is perhaps to most legendary Finnish game reviewer/philosopher/etc. Hes been doing this stuff from the mid 80's.

"the reviewers were simply speaking their mind"
This is true - but there's also such a thing as good and bad reviews.
Ideally, I can review a game I hate, and still have you read the review and realize you'd love the game, or vice versa. When I'm writing a negative review, I try to keep in mind the nebulous figure of the person who would love the game, and try to make sure I include information for that person too. I don't always succeed, but the objective is there. :) (It's much easier to warn people off of something you think is great, actually - "this game is great, but not for everyone" sorts of angles.)

Ahem. Sorry, it's just that, as a game designer, that really annoys me. It's unrealistic that you CAN'T be good at more than one thing IMO. This ignoring the fact you're a freakin` Guardian. If anything, you should be able to blast enemies away with your throughts, not just magic. :p
...then again, I'm not even past 10% of the game I suspect, maybe there's a twist... *g*

OK, PC Gamer just came in the mail. Flipping to reviews and..........
ARX!!!!!!!!!
Let's see, I'll just post the Final Verdict.......
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Highs: Innovative onscreen spellcasting; attractive visuals; free-form, old-school gameplay.
Lows: Clipping problems; it's possible to "break" the script; no mini-map; some spells are tough to cast.
Bottom Line: If you can deal with the bugs, Arx Fatalis is a delight for RPG connoisseurs.
85% EXCELLENT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It should be noted that this review was written on the game without the patches.
When the author was talking about breaking the script, he was talking about being able to access a section of Arx that would have ordinarily been unavailable.

The Australian magazine PCGameZone gave Arx a very favourable review and awarded it 89/100 points.

PC Gamer is always whining about the clipping. ok ok. Whatever. At least they give an excellent rating which is what this game deserves. I have only had it for a week and I love it. I have noticed that I can break the scripting, however. For more opinion on the game, see my post, "why Arx is the best RPG."
