i re-installed arx fatalis (the reason is too dumb to write about) and i noticed that that the new patch creates a carpet on program files thats simply called arx fatalis.
see, i had the game installed on the default location - programfiles/jowood/arx and because the patch creates the shorcut on the desktop and on the start programs, those look for the game executable on program files/arx and not the one i had it installed on (programfiles/jowood/arx).
so this is weird.
and i think the cheat doesn't work either with the new patch. i think. tried hitting the chair 10 times with the bone on the left (next to the table) and it breaks after the 2nd hit. wanted to play with cheats :) maybe i'm doing it wrong?

What did you mean by "the new patch creates a carpet on program files"?
Shadowcat on 9/11/2007 at 21:25
Definitely lost in translation, that!
However... when I used the new patch, the existing 'short cuts' (which aren't short cuts, really) ceased to work, and in fact caused a most unexpected error when I used them:
Quote:
Arx Fatalis - Error
Unable to Find Data File
Please Reinstall ARX Fatalis
I have the game installed in E:\Games\Arx Fatalis, and simply going there and running ARX.exe worked fine (whereupon I forgot all about it, and didn't think to mention all this here... oops...)
So something a bit amiss with the patch in that regard, but nothing to stress over. If this happens, just create new short cuts to the executable to replace any old desktop/menu short cuts you had.

After playing a fair way through the game with a couple different character builds, I've noticed a few changes.
The jumping puzzle on level 8 seems much easier. I got it on my first attempt (instead of the 20+ reloads it used to take), and I only screwed up once on the second play through of that level.
Traps/locks seem to require more points in the skill to succeed, and lots more retries to finally get them. Even using Bless to pump my skill up to 96, it took several attempts to pick locks that I recall being easy successes with 70 points (and I think the bank job was the only thing that used to require 70).
Fireball damage is much more random. With 120+ points in magic, I've taken out a ylside and a lich with a single fireball. But it usually take 2 or 3 to put down a ylside, and at least one lich took 3 fireballs, a beating with a meteor sword, and 3 more fireballs (after running away and hiding to redo the confounded runes) before he croaked. And more than once I've nailed a rat with a fireball, only to have the sucker still alive and chewing on my ankles. Not what I recall from the last time I played the game -- with 120-140 in magic, one fireball would usually kill anything except liches, the dragon, and Mr Tentacles McEndgame.
The hell beast is now a right pain to deal with. He's learned the ability to eat the dwarf meat without even entering the room, forcing me to make 8-10 reload attempts to get it on both trips through.
Movement speed frequently doubles while running around, and tends to be guaranteed in some locations (like when crossing the bridge in front of the troll camp).
The bone/chair cheat no longer gives 40,000+ XP -- which sucks, since it was a nice way to experiment with different character builds.
There seems to be more XP available than before. Both of my chars are 9th level, and still have a ways to go. Getting to 10th might now be possible. Used be 9th was difficult to achieve even after doing all quests -- I recall only getting 9th level once.
Right now I have two characters half way through the crypts, and the liches have gotten to be more annoying than worth fighting. I played the heck out of it the first time around, and still have everything memorized four years later. Kinda makes it hard to re-experience when you're playing by rote.

And just to confirm that, as expected, the patch does not do anything about the coronas-through-walls issue with the nVidia GF8x00 series video cards.
:(
I really hoped that the new patch would fix this.

Please for the love of god come out in the US. It's nearly impossible finding a new copy of Arx, and mine disappeared a long with a case of pre-2003 games that I had.
It's on Steam, for $10usd.
