So, I generally find the TTLG folk to be a good source of film info. So I was wondering if any of you folks use Netflix, and if so if we could establish some sort of list of who did so we could (if desired) add eachother to the whole Netflix Friends thingy. To start off, I'm aerothorn@gmail.com.

"My ex says I'm just looking for meaningless hookups when I call Nexflix Friends. And you know what? She's right!" :sly:

I would, but I dumped Netflix for Blockbuster. I didn't want to, but I couldn't deny it was the better deal ($14.99/mo plus two free in-store rentals per month). And... I was getting really pissed off by Netflix's "throttling" practices. They give priority shipping and selection on DVDs to members who are not heavy renters, and actively delay shipping to those that are. The whole "queue" thing is a farce, you'll only get the next item on your list if none of the 'light-renters' want it first, and then they'll wait a day before sending it. :nono:
(sniff)
And we used to be SO good together!

Bastards. That makes so much more sense now.
And here I was blaming it all on the crappy postal service of the state of Alabama...
Turns out that's only half of the reason!

Netflix? There is a clicky button on the satalite thingy that works pretty well. Netflix sounds like banks these days. If you have repossed trucks and boats and RVs it's come right in and prop up your feet while I massage your grandmother but if you have perfect credit they look at you sideways just because you want money for tabledances. The bastards.

Geez, can't I post ANYTHING without everyone critiqueing it? Bleh.
As for Blockbuster, I admit I never really looked into it, due to my just bad experience with them, both actual retail outlets (one run by hick in Georgia) and company policy (that ridiculous 'no late fees' thing).
I had heard about the queue throttling, but don't know the full story - was this ever proven to be true (i.e. leaked company documents) or is this just reasonable hearsay? That said, my orders (while sometimes shipper slower then they should) are reasonable and we certainly get our moneys worth- you only have to rent 5 or so a month to draw even with the physical store, and that's not factoring in the convenience or wider selection - for a lot of the stuff I get from Netflix I'd have to go all the way across town to Scarecrow Video, which no one will ever drive me to.
Edit: Checked their site, and it says it's $18 a month for 3 movies, same as Netflix - so guess only difference is service and the free store coupons.
And does Blockbuster have a good selection (i.e. basically everything availible on DVD)?

Simmer down sweetie, nobody's critisizing you. And if you're happy with Netflix, that's great. I believe I said I would have gladly joined your group, but am not with Netflix anymore, and then I went on to explain why. Oh, and the throttling is real, believe me. I was throttled... big time, and when I wrote to Netflix about it, their reply clearly stated that's what they do (course they didn't call it "throttling". Then they got sued for this very thing, and now it's actually spelled out in their terms of service that you agree to when you join. Check out (

Regarding the Blockbuster price, I think I got in during the "Online-DVD-Rental-Price-War" which is why I got the $14.99/mo. They did send me an email saying that price might go up after 6 months, but it never has.
[oh fuck me, I've done it now, haven't I? I've tempted the fates. Just watch, tomorrow I'll get an email from Blockbuster telling me the price is going up. :erm: ]
Anyway, even at $18/mo I'd still stay with Blockbuster (for the time being anyway) those free coupons are pretty handy for when you miss getting a really cool new release and now it'll be a "very long wait", just toodle down to the corner and grab a copy, free! I like to also use them for 2-disc sets, which are counted as 1 rental at the store but 2 online. Also, besides the 2 free rentals, there's often other coupons like for 2for1 previously-viewed DVDs etc. Couple of times I got a coupon for a
free PV DVD.
I still prefer Netflix's site, it's far more organized and fleshed-out. Plus the reviews, trailers, and comprehensive info about each title. Blockbuster really can't touch them site-wise, but they're improving it slowly.
