It is impossible to separate cognition and consciousness from the structures in which they arise; the body as a biological system and as a personal, phenomenologically experienced system and then the physical world with which that body interacts.
This suggests that reductionism becomes absurd because you can never go far enough back to create a big enough list.
Though we don't know yet if there is a tipping point, a place where a critical mass of info is gathered, leading to a feedback loop, creating a form of self awareness where characteristics are translated into concepts.

Not the newest video, and I know none of these are his theories but it's the first I'd heard of a Dyson sphere, the Kardashev scale, and the concept of Singularity.
So what you're saying is that you've never read any decent science fiction.

So what you're saying is that any science fiction that makes no mention of a Dyson sphere, the Kardashev scale, or the concept of Singularity isn't worth reading.

...
YES.

Very interesting, gentlemen! Exactly what I'd hoped for.
@ZB: I've not read too much, mostly Star Wars expanded universe, literally all of Ray Bradbury's short stories(no mention of these things, and damn decent Sci-Fi:p), and a little Arthur C Clarke. Clarke I'm sure touches on these in some writings though I didn't get very far in his compilation. Perhaps you could recommend some further reading surrounding these subjects?

Ringworld, doi.
PeeperStorm on 12/2/2010 at 21:12
Go read some Larry Niven. You'll learn more hard science than you know what to do with. Start with Ringworld for a little hot Dyson Sphere action, among other things.
Stitch on 12/2/2010 at 21:35
I would read Ringworld, but after ZylonBane's "doi" post I'm afraid it's simply out of the question.
Sulphur on 12/2/2010 at 21:54
Good. You should just read The Stars My Destination instead. All of you. Because it's a good book. No doi.
