I was thinking of buying one of these when they are released. Do you think it'll be a solid step up from the quad core extreme?

Dude, its gonna Cost £1100/$2200 for the cpu(2.66ghz)+Mobo(X58)+mem(tri channel ddr3), wait for the new Amd Shanghai chip, it will be cheaper and just as fast.

I prefer not to buy a pre-made pc(dell, Hp, etc), I always buy separate parts etc if thats what you mean..? and who is cliffyb..?

the creator of Unreal Tournament, Gears of War, etc.
do you think now is a good time to buy a new PC or should I wait for the next-gen technology? How much better do you think the latter will be?

If you need the upgrade, then it's a good time to upgrade. Otherwise, you'll always be waiting for the next upgrade cycle.

what he said....
but as the next big cycle in november only includes intel and a feck load of cash, which most of us, me included cant afford or justify atm, its a mute point.
Far cry 2 will play very well on systems a step or 2 below mine so if your setup is thusly then I would wait till next year to upgrade,...
