Widely available favourites of mine would be Wells Bombardier, Marston's Pedigree, London Pride and Bath Ales Gem to name a few (although I'm not sure about finding that last one outside of the south west).
I would try to get hold of some Real Ales if it's for a gift. There's nothing hugely wrong with Boddington's or Newcastle Brown ale but they're far from the best the country has to offer.

Look for Ruddles County, Greene King Abbot, Wadworths 6x, Fullers London Pride, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Arkells Kingsdown Ale and Batemans XXXB.

I quite like Brains.
(albeit British rather than English)
Also Everards Tiger. Arkells is pretty decent, but I've only had one and can't remember which.

I don't want something that is to English beer what Budweiser is to American beer or fosters is to Aussie beer.
Fosters isn't actually that popular in Australia, you can't really find it anywhere. VB is probably the Australian equivalent.
BEAR on 9/12/2008 at 23:24
I guess bud is kind of an amalgamation of the two. What I meant was that bud is what the world thinks American beer is. Most Americans at least would think that Fosters was the height of Australian beer (thanks in no small part to their American advertising campaign). I guess the difference is we actually do drink a lot of Budweiser here, but probably not as much as the rest of the world thinks.

Newcastle Brown Ale is trash and will not do as a present for all but the most loutish. If someone gave me that as a present they'd ne're darken my door again.
Get some Old Tom or Tanglefoot. In fact look up Badger Ales, Robinsons Ales and Shepherd Neame Ales - you'll find a range or ales to suit all tastes. Bishops Finger is in there somewhere too.
And have you considered Soiders (Ciders)?
BEAR on 10/12/2008 at 02:05
No about the cider, but its funny you should mention that. I'm thinking about trying to make some (my family made about 150 gallons of fresh cider this fall). Not sure if I'll be willing to part with it though :D

Isn't bud light the most popular beer in the USA?
BEAR on 10/12/2008 at 02:23
I don't actually know. It might be in pure numbers.
