I'm on the 7th level. I just spoke with the imp and chose a crown (the right one I assume). Now what? I found the secret door, but when I ascend the stairs, I either run into a couple of areas full of columns or an area that seems to poison me. Am I supposed to jump across the columns to find the next area? I still haven't found the spider webs with which to attach the scales so the heat of these areas keep killing me. Am I at least on the right track?

Shame about the silk, but if you made it this far, you'll make it to the end without them. The area that poisons you is Tyball's maze. Put the crown on to see the right way through. The columns room will lead you back to the start of the level.

My advice is getting those boots cause for me they really helped. And you will really need them on level 8. I think either the first or second level has the silk. I havn't played in such a long time that I don't remember. I think it is when you kill a lot of spiders your in a rough cave and there are little pieces of thread lying on the ground. i do know that it is one of the early levels though. good luck!

The spider silk is on the very fist level by the gray goblins. Those boots are going to help a LOT when you go down to the next level...

It's not that easy...like I said in an earlier posting, I killed all the spiders and at one point had the webs figuring I would make a fishing pole out of them. Unfortunately, when I came across my first real pole, I discarded them, and really have no recollection of where they might now be. Is it worth it starting from the very beginning and searching for them?

I don't think you need to restart. There are items that compensate the player whichever class they are. For a non-mage, there is a ring of levitate. Unfortunately, it is on a ledge along the lava tunnels of level 7. With this, though, you can effectively fly above all the lava on level 8. You just hold down the -shift- key while moving. This will speed the player up, but it also will do the same for everything else in the game.
The greatest aspect of this game is the adaptability of the player's style. I don't think that the dragon scale boots are necessary to finish the game, but it is nice to have in case you don't find another way around the lava danger, i.e. Fly or Levitate.
Experience in the Shock games and the Underworlds shows that there are multiple ways to acomplish the same thing. Who hasn't collected huge amounts of stuff thinking they'd come in handy sometime. Often you just don't need something because you figured another path out.
Anyway, if you made it this far, I'm sure you'll make it. Tell me this, do you have all the talismans? If you do and you are unsure of playing without the boots, then just bolt for the final part of the game.

Thanks for your continuing assistance, Brad. No, I still need the Key of Love (haven't found the guy with the picture yet), the Key of courage and the Key of Infinity. I did come across something called
strong cord on level 8. will it work instead of the spider webs? I guess I will go find out.
Brad Schoonmaker on 6/8/2000 at 20:23
No problem.
Strong cord is a new one to me. Try it.

The picture is tricky to get from the guy. You have to answer him in a way that seems wrong, somehow, if I remember right. I don't even remember who it is.
The Key of Courage is more direct. Kill your way up some stairs a few levels to an area on the 3rd level.
The Key of Infinity should be easy to figure out if you've played Ultima 4.
