Hi, I just got Thief Gold, and am trying to set up my Madcatz controller.
It is just like the X-box (Original , not 360) S-type controller.
I cannot get thief to recognize it properly.
Part of the problem is the thumbsticks, but even using X-padder isn't helping.
If anyone could advise?
Thank you.

Hi
Are you using an Xbox/Xbox360 or a PC..?

Hi, I am using a PC and playing Thief Gold.
I have an Madcatz pc game pad that is identical to the type s X-box controller.
I wasn't aware Thief 1 or gold were available for other platforms?

It isnt, I just wanted to ascertain if you were using a pc with a controller etc. Can I ask why you want to use a controller rather than a mouse and keyboard..? The game isnt built to be readily usable with a controller, that said if windows can see the controller than Thief might be able to aswell -

I have problems with my hands, the x-box s controller is the most comfortable I have found. Nice and smooth. The keyboard controls make me too slow and awkward. :(

Ah ok.. well I have a Saitek controller around here somewhere, so I will see if I can dig it out and attempt to get it working with Thief.

Most USB controllers and other will not work with thief. The operative here is MOST.
I have used a THRUSTMASTER board, and a SAITEK gamepad successfully but only with a W98 setup. I've not tried it with XP.
If anyone can figure it out, it will be Bikerdude. Good luck to you both.

I've been using a joystick with Thief for a while without any specific problems. I only use half of the joystick, mind you (to replace the keyboard), but still use the Mouse in my right hand. So, I can help you get it working for analog move & strafe (arguable better than having three modifier keys on the keyboard anyhow), but I can't really help you get the right stick set up as look/turn.
First, make sure you're patched up. I'd recommend using the ddfix executable you can find elsewhere on this site for other compatibility reasons. Next, go into your Thief folder, open DARK.CFG in a text editor, and add joystick_enable somewhere in the file. Once that's in there, you should be able to map joystick buttons in the regular control config interface. I can't remember if it also adds options to set the axis options, or if the way I use it is just default; have a look when you get in the game.
I have a "Tri Linker Plus" which is a Gamecube/Dreamcast/PS2 to USB adaptor, and I've also used this with a Thrustmaster gamepad. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work with the 360 controller, unless Microsoft/s drivers for that alter the interface that older games would expect.

There is that, which would probably be the easiest solution for the right stick if you wanted to use it for looking around. I'd still recommend trying to get at least the left stick working "normally" to get analog movement in Thief, which really really helps. For instance, you can sneak at a speed slower than crouch + sneak while standing just by moving the stick at the right rate.
