Hrm... one of the two you need to kill is in the Governor's Hall (Odral Helvi), so that should be good, but the other one (Stlennius Vibato) is hiding on the ground floor, around the corner from the stairs, in a building in the Caldera mining camp ("Caldera, Mining Company Office"). There's just no way that they're both dead, given what you've said.
As to menu mode... you know the mode that lets you access your inventory, the map, and your stats? That's the one I meant. Open that up, then go to the character stats window and scroll it all the way down. Then hover your pointer over the guild in question.
ps: Freeing the slaves too early will show that message, but it means squat.
