Im ok until the part where it says to open up the install.cfg in notepad. all I see is a jumbled mess when I do though....any thoughts?

Try open the file with Wordpad.

I'd suggest notepad but whatever screws your game I guess.

I have noticed scrambled files too, not install.cfg though.
I suggested Wordpad because it seems to display text normally, that would otherwise be scrambled if viewed by Notepad. :erm:

Yeah I didn't read correctly. That he had tried notepad already.
I never had the problem but I also never use any of these programs.
I would suggest in this case to download a real text/code editor like (
http://www.pspad.com/en/download.php) pspad or (
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php) notepad++.
Also NEVAR touch these files with something as impure as MS Word. That's the only sure fired way to screw them up I know.

For simple text editing, I think Wordpad or Notepad are pretty good for the job. ;)
