Had the same problem with Thief I, so followed the fix (Start, Run, d:\setup.exe-lgntforce) and it worked.(YAAAAAY!!!!) Now having great fun playing Thief I......
Then I tried to install Thief II the same way but no joy.!!!!! It tells me to install Direct X, but then won't let me.....Anyone know what I can do????
Please please please please please!!!!

You most likely won't need DirectX because you already have a newer version. Run DxDiag via run in the start menu, it will show you which version you've got installed. If it's 7 or newer, you don't need to install it. If it's older, skip it anyway and download DirectX 9.0c.

System specifications would help. Are you running Vista or XP, for example?
If you find that it is impossible to use the installer to install the game, you can do the "manual install" of thief, explained by The Brain.
You could make sure that setup.exe on the CD has compatibility mode set to windows 2000 or windows 98
