What about post-hardcore? I find that to be more palatable (example would be Beloved.)

If you are not already familiar with them you can give a listen to much of their catalogue at the linked site. You can do the same with many others on Mckaye's label (Dischord) as well, such as (

Great list, heretic. The Ramones were the best, man!
You could probably consider Billy Idol, Adam Ant, and Blondie punk, though more of a pop-punk.

Some guy posted from a list that Kurt Cobain made in his journal of his top 50 artists (a representative song from them) -- (
http://www.youtube.com/user/dropd26#play/uploads)
(The list is on the right hand side, all the videos headed by
Kurt Cobain's Top 50)
It's turned into a kind of who's who of punk, if you made Kurt's list.

The Distillers!!!
(

a Staple.
Also for a bit more modern style, I recommend Rise Against. They're not really punk by 90s standards, I think they're given the "post-hardcore" moniker, whatever that means. But I went a long time without punk and they did get me back into it.
Seriously though.. the distillers.

They're local, but they're pretty huge in most of the North American punk scene. Their main website is down right now for some reason so I've provided the myspace link.

Then there's all the punk poets
John Cooper Clark,
Attlila the Stockbroker (I saw him this summer, superb)
(Also saw Sham 69 and got dragged away by security during Borstal Breakout due to a mix up, despite the fact I was working. They let me go pretty quick. They thought I was smoking crack!! I mean come on, who'd get a crack pipe out in a mosh pit apart from the fact the stuff is fucking horrendous).
Butthole Surfers always worth a listen. Start with "Physic.. Powerless.. Another Man's Sac" and "Hairway to Steven".
Heretic pretty much nailed it.
(I'll give you Gen X Heretic. But Queue, Billy Idol! That's a new low my man)
