(

Scientists were baffled, as the only large object orbiting Earth was the moon. The link above shows just how close it got and how long it stuck around for before continuing on its long, lonely journey into deepest, darkest space.
At first they thought it was a large meteorite but (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J002E3) astonomers found something in the object's electromagnetic spectrum...
There are other explanations, they are missing the most obvious one though:

It's not an asteroid, sir.
How do you know?
It's slowing down.
It looks to me like they did a survey via long-range scanners, updated their galactic encyclopedia from "mostly harmless" to "try not to get any of them on you," and left.

So this thing swung by us more than once over the course of 2 years and we werent informed? It looked like it came pretty damn close. Maybe NASA knew exactly where it was going, maybe not, maybe they shit themselves every couple of months that it came in our direction, in an ominously close orbit. If we're about to die they should at least let us know. :p

Since its in nearly the same orbit with us its not going very fast. Nor is it very big. Really not a danger of any sort.
