Sorry if this has been asked before... I looked but couldn't find it...
Can you pick your own names for potions and enchanted items?
When I go to create a potion, it lets me type in a name for it, so I think, ooh goody, call this one "Zora's Medicinal Compound". But when I add an ingredient it renames the potion to the first effect of the first ingredient, i.e. 'restore health'. I can't see from the name what other effects my potion has, or how strong it is. Plus it's really boring.
A similar thing happens with enchanted items; I can put a name in, but it gets overwritten with the item name as soon as I put one in. OK so it's funny to have a Common Pants enchantment, but I can't tell the difference between one enchanted ring and another.
It can't be meant to work this way... can it?

Yes.
The best way to prevent the name from being replaced is holding back from typing it in until your ready to press the 'Buy'/'Create' button.

Thanks Red. I've tried that, but once the name has been overwritten with whatever tedious automatic name Morrowind wants to give it, I can't click into the box any more to edit it.
-very puzzling-

Well that shouldn't happen at all... sounds like a bug to me (although not one i've ever heard of) if your on the PC id suggest downloading the new patch (if you haven't already) other than that just hope forsythe reads your thread and knows the answer.
It does sound to me like your talking specifically about potions etc are you sure this also happens with enchanting?
Sorry i can't help anymore.

Try holding backspace until the previous name has been deleted. The game never removes text focus from those input fields, whatever you type should show up there.

If your making lots of potions, then you should rename it after you are down to your last ingredients, if you havent lvled while making potions, then it should rename all of them to the last one. If you leveled, then the potions magnitude and stuff should change, and make a new stack, then you cant rename them... It's not a bug that the potion renames itself to the effect after you hit the create button, I dont think it is anyway, cause it always has happened to me.
But since I have 100 alchemy, I just keep hitting create untill I'm down to 1 of each ingredient left, then I rename the potion, which renames all of the ones I made before. I don't have to worry about a new stack being made since I cant lvl higher than 100.

I filled my first grand soul gem with a golden saint the other day and when I tried to enchant my daedric katana I had the same problem. Included a the end of the name was an open bracket also "[". I backed out at that point. I was afraid to waste the grand soul gem or ruin my katana.

Thanks everyone.
Red, this is definitely happening with enchantments too, and I do have the patch already. I will keep trying.

Sorry for bumping this thread.
I'm surpirised that the naming thing wasn't done better. I wanted to create a bunch of "fortify speed" potions, but what I used to make it also drained fatigue as well, and that was what the potion wanted to be named. I'm on the XBox (though re-typing the potion name every time would have sucked even with a keyboard).
Maybe someone should put together an annoyances FAQ or something... I know there are a few other things around like this tha have simple work-arounds but are annoying anyway.
BTW - thanks kilana for the info, it was a big help (what, about a year after you posted it :D )
